I dont really see a problem. especially considering its not just the cpu, but the supporting eco system thats going to be more expensive, so if you have 1k to spend on just the cpu, pay up, especially if its not for work

lol some of the AM5 X670E boards costs 1,000€ these days like Aorus Extreme and Asus Apex so why are people concerned about HEDT boards costing that much...

for the independant creator or small studio this may seem steep. but pro server boards not so much given the latest technologies imho these aren't HEDT anymore, which no doubt is cause for complaining. the market came and grabbed a builder's favorite niche and took it to work. HEDT just means busy making money now. and just like the Paris fashion week rule - if you have to ask, you can't afford it

Not really. Hell my X399 Taichi was $750 new in 2017............ When you have consumer boards cost $1000, HDET is a bargain. Considering I still can slap up to 256GB of ram, and 48 threads in my X399, I wont have to upgrade that setup for another 10 years as long as it doesnt die.

The people concerned about the pricing of these boards are also concerned about the absurd price of consumer socket boards.

My X99 Taichi board launched at $330. Inflation adjusted that puts it around $450. The X399 Taichi launched at $340 to $350 Agonist (source Tweaktown review and this sites review). Also - Agonist, just like with all PCs, 5 to 6 years and you're going to yearn for the single thread performance improvements, regardless of how many cores you have.

This guy gets it. I will never understand how we went from 'lol Intel released a $1700 CPU how stupid do they think we are?' to 'lol consumer socket motherboards cost $1000 stop complaining.' AMD has pointlessly doubled the price of consumer socket with unreasonably high core counts and as a result caused motherboard manufacturers to create absurd boards. That does not mean that it is OK to overprice HEDT (not that TRX50 is even HEDT if it was priced reasonably, it's Lite Workstation because of the registered ECC memory and core counts). Consumer socket boards shouldn't cost more than $350 or so unless they include additional features like a full cover water block. HEDT if it existed should start at like $450 to $600 depending on the features (lane count, memory support, ect). It should also start at 12 cores for not more than $600 and 16 cores for not more than $900. There's no need for more than 32 cores on HEDT with Workstation platforms existing. I mean seriously, X99, $330 for the board, another $620 or so for the 6850k is like $950 entry for the base platform. (technically the 6800k was available cheaper, but I don't count the pcie lane gimped SKU) Inflation adjusted that $950 is around $1216 today. So, no, I'm not willing to pay a grand for just the CPU or just the board. And no I'm not ever going to be desperate enough to pay that much for inferior consumer socket hardware. I'll just buy used hardware if the companies want to try to treat me like a brainless money piñata.

OK, so Newegg finally started adding some TRX50 products and Gigabyte Aero D seems to be coming in at $600 (although it could use more PCIE slots). The $800 Asrock TRX50 WS looks pretty good but it's like $100 extra per additional PCIE slot. Now all AMD needs to do is release reasonably priced 12 and 16 core chips and while it still uses the registered memory that I don't want, it could potentially fall into the area of reasonably priced.

If you want reasonable priced 12/16 core chip you might as well buy a consumer ryzen 7000 cpu and x670 motherboard.

Do you read? Consumer socket is not acceptable. 12 somewhat but definitely 16 core CPUs don't even belong on that socket. Anything over 8 is a waste because by the time you feel you actually need the cores, the newer chips will be 30 to 50 percent faster single thread performance and you will desperately want to upgrade anyway. I'm willing to pay like 50% more to get a CPU with the same number of cores for a full computer instead of the same features in a basic dell/hp/prebuilt. That'd be like $600 for a 12c and $900 for a 16c.

You are pretty arrogant, and well arseholish for being new around here. Secondly, no shit about IPC. Why the hell do you think I went from a dual 1366 Xeon 12 thread cpu setup to the thread ripper in the first place. But I dont yearn to the point I wanna upgrade it for its 2017 level Ryzen IPC. Its still kicks ass. Launch price of the X399 Taichi was $599 USD, but I had to pay $699 to get it. So shovel your dribble. No one is justifying the cost, let alone of a $1000 Consumer board and saying deal with it. You lack comprehension and blinded by your own vison of facts and opinions.

If the launch price of the X399 Taichi was $599, multiple outlets have gone back and retroactively changed the price of their launch reviews. Oh and camelcamelcamel would have gotten it wrong too. It is currently $599 on Amazon from a third party seller because it is a discontinued board, but the launch price was absolutely 340-350. https://www.guru3d.com/review/asrock-x399-taichi-review#:~:text=The X399 board is among the cheaper ones available listed at € 369,- / 349 USD.

And yes, I come off rough. Wouldn't you be after listening to people constantly trying to tell you to just buy a 5950X/7950X without understanding why it's insufficient? I'm tired of trying to argue for reasonable pricing to come back to both consumer and HEDT only to be told to buy a freaking consumer part. If I wanted a consumer part, I'd buy an Alienware pre-built.

@cracklingice might wanna do a little web search about how capitalism works, how many ppl besides YOU live on this planet that are possible buyers, nor are you the benchmark ,for how/what products companies (think they) want to sell, and at what price. ignoring for a moment that those things are a "want" and not a "need" for ppl to have, and that no one forces you to buy anything. should we also stop making pink bicycles, you know, cause you dont want one... its one thing to not like how its priced, but that doesnt mean i will sour it for the ones that want one and have the funds to buy it

I really miss when Intel was the 'overpriced monopoly' and we got what we paid for instead of pointless $700 HEDT priced consumer socket chips and no more HEDT. At least back then, we got the features we were already paying for. I am not arguing for lower prices or for people not getting what they want, I am arguing for better segmentation and for getting what you pay for. I am on the side of everyone (but corporate greed) here. Also, you mention how capitalism works. Right now, neither company has a product to sell me so they are clearly not capitalizing right because they have zero chance of getting money from me or from anyone like me that doesn't want to be forced to buy an unreasonably high core count just to get the platform features. I have already said that a $1500 entry point for a 16 core and board would be reasonable and frankly should be very reasonable to produce too as that is a $900 16 core chip. It'd be nice if they also had a 12 core slot in around $600 because then it would bring real competition to the market space. Intel already offers 12 and 16 core chips but they are 1k and 1.4k. I suspect that the W790 refresh will see a pretty decent price cut for the W5-2400 segment. Either that or they'll just pull an AMD and double the core count just to keep prices high.

the problem is, outside forums like this (and others), the general market will buy if they have the funds, independently of the fact that they are getting lesser of a deal. until we see larger numbers saying "nope", its not gonna change much (pricing).

This is why ever since the whole HEDT goes away and everyone being all excited about 16 core consumer socket parts I have been expounding why it is actually a bad thing. Eventually, the people telling me I don't need HEDT will want to install more SSDs and try to use their fancy new dual or quad M.2 riser card and find out first hand why.
