This is an interesting sized screen.

if this was from anyone other than Asus i'd say hooray. with Asus i'm left wondering about the price especially as one could get the Aorus F048u oled (C2 based) 4k for under $800, or just an LG C2 for the same money. 38" is big enough for some to rule out desktop use (not me i use a table vesa mount) and big enough to consider the 42" oled

Would be cool if I didn't have one of these since launch (and more then likely for at least half the price): https://tweakers.net/pricewatch/1691964/lc-power-lc-m39-qhd-165-c-wit.html Very happy with this monitor, probabbly wont replace until it's completely dead. Also, it's actually a 4K display (although at 60hz), but still that was a nice suprise concidering I bought a 1440P Monitor and you get a 4K one as "option" as the recommended resolution is 1440p, but the option to use 4k @ 60hz works fine to, also in game resolution selections. Anyway - I've always felt Asus screens are way overpriced for what your getting, and there are generally cheaper screens available with the same or better specs.

An LG C2 42" would be too large for my gaming set-up and so is this 38" Asus although it's going to appeal to some. I use an Asus PG35VQ Ultrawide (no OLED Alienware available in 2020 sadly) and my next gaming monitor upgrade will probably be a 32" 4K HDR1000+ & 175 Hz+ spec screen. How far do you sit from your vesa held screen?

Asus, Apple and Razer all 'demand' their fanboy taxes, the trick is to wait until their new product gets discounted at a Black Friday sale (I saved £700 on my Asus PG35VQ monitor in 2020) but there was no better Ultrawide available then and I remember how expensive my previous Dell U2711 was in 2010 (1440, 60Hz, IPS, 27", 16:9). I patiently wait for 4K HDR BluRays to halve in price before buying so it pays to wait.

about one meter with a 42" ROG

42" is not too large when wall mounted just above a desk, which gives you flexibility in viewing distance (you can pull your desk out a few inches). It is too large when placed on a desk.

Ok, I sit 75cms from my Asus PG35VQ Ultrawide, I had to turn my gaming table longways otherwise I'd have been too close. I then changed my Razer Blackwidow V3 Pro keyboard to a Corsair K65 RGB Mini as the width of my table is now only 75cms and then to an Asus Azoth keyboard as I found the Corsair too flimsy. The Azoth is an 80% mechanical keyboard and is superb but typically very expensive!

If you're using your 42" for TV & films, not just for gaming, then that makes good sense. I turned my gaming table longways when I bought my Asus PG35VQ Ultrawide in 2020 so I have 120cms to play with but I only use it for gaming. I have a laptop in my gaming room/study and a LG G2 55" downstairs for TV & films. Doesn't pixel density reduce as the screen size increases?
https://forums.guru3d.com/data/avatars/m/271/271560.jpg
pixel density is a function of the panel, not size. there are LOTS of smaller screens with lower density as those panels are cheaper to source. so this is an area of the buyer needing the ppi info before the purchase.

right now i'm using a 55" x 28" desk and a rog/strix flare full kb - i was sick of Corsair bloatware, but love their kb the vesa mount has a vise clamp for the back of the desk and has height adj. i don't sit belly-to-the-desk, but roughly 6-8 in front using the armrests on the chair and an aftermarket generic gel wrist rest for the kb (the supplied wrist rest sucked). i had used Gatorworks desk mount speaker stands for my studio monitors, but i had to change them out to floorstanding speaker stands as a 42" monitor on a 55" desk didn't leave room.

Picked up a 42" C2 for $720 to test out. Absolutely love it. As an older gamer, makes it so much easier to track targets. I don't even need to wear my glasses while playing. I use these(Mount / Adapter) to mount it to my desk. I know 27"/1440P is the sweet spot, but I find it hard to see enemy players in games like CoD and BF.
