Perhaps now would be a good time for Intel to get back into motherboards. I still have fond memories of the SE440BX.

Not surprised. Other than the low budget Asus Prime series boards, Asus is the most expensive boards on average in regards to the Intel 12 gen lineup.

back then they were 4-5 layer pcbs, liquid electrolytics with "dumb" power designs.
