Truth to be told, that M3 chip is a engineering brilliant design. And that GPU announcement, that it could easily render games like never before... How much time until Apple makes a move towards gaming industry? If they do that, well, it not bodes well for some .

The downside are the extreme prices. People are talking about how comfortable nVidia is at charging consumers high prices for their GPUs but Apple have overcharged their consumers for a long time imho and the latest M3 books are no exception.

The most expensive model is nearing 10k here...

Apple is overcharging parts of what they sell. If you put a Macbook of the equivalent cost, it will last longer and usually perform better than any equivalent Windows system, without even the ecosystem benefits it has, like a much better OS. Their memory upgrade prices are a joke, but their chassis, battery, keyboard/trackpad/monitor quality are definitely not. And as a user of an M1 Max laptop for work, it's by far the best workhorse machine I've ever used. Proper 120Hz HDR screen with good calibration and high resolution, compatibility with all major command line tools and the ability to have a proper terminal, never feels like chugging along, and I think I've heard the fan only when playing World of Warcraft on it.

I must agree on the performance/cost of those devices. No questions. But the OS limitations, some things have to be done the Apple way and the closed ecosystem, not to mention the no upgrade path, puts me away from buying a machine from them. Maybe when it will become cheaper and there will be a Linux distro for it.Maybe.

The combination of hard- and software is just *that* much better that I'd always get around the downsides. For personal use & my private creative work, my MBP is faster than my full-blown i7. Go figure.

It's about what makes you productive or hinders you less. I like their take on engineering and technical prowess. But I dislike more their way of dealing with their users, policies and so on. Nevertheless, lots of people I know swear by their MBP and it shows. I tried the first M1 and I was impressed.

It needs getting used to it & it feels like I'm still not using it to its fullest after a year. Still, incredible engineering. I went from a Windows laptop, Android phone & Linux receiver to all Apple in a matter of a few years. Peace of mind.

I don’t understand the closed ecosystem argument. They run basically everything except Windows apps. They support and work with multiple package managers that do far more than any Windows equivalent (Homebrew, Nix etc), and that’s without any “hacks”. The boot loader is not locked, it just won’t work if you’re not the owner, which is great. My command line tools are as customised as any Linux system I’ve had (they’re in fact copied from my desktop Arch install with basically almost zero modifications). They will run Intel Mac apps without complaint, and since they released the Game Toolkit things have become really interesting.
