I find it funny how people here think that they're considering buying this or pondering how it'll handle their current workload. It's a server CPU - neither the processor itself or the motherboard selections will interest any of you for your daily needs. As far as I'm aware, AMD intends to only release 4 and 8 core CPUs for desktops for the foreseeable future.

2 bits would give them a placeholder big enough for 16 core CPU.
3 bits increases the maximum possible core count to 32.
Choosing between 16 and 32 core count placeholder, they went with 32.
Can have... maximum count....placeholder.
None of this suggests that there will actually be 32 core CPU.
The next line shows the socket ID being shifted left by 3, leaving 3 bits for the core complex ID, which suggests a maximum number of eight core complexes per socket, or 32 physical cores.
This number should first be seen as a placeholder, but we've already seen rumours mentioning that many cores

2016-2017 is meant to be the year(s) that multi-core/multi-threading will become the norm.
It's been slow in taking hold but with the inclusion of DX12 and Windows 10 then i'm hoping that this year will see a huge increase in apps/games that are fully multi-threaded.
I think the uptake of Win 10 has a lot to do with it. If we could get everyone on Win 10 then i'm sure multi-threading will be in everything eventually.

There 0 mentions its server's CPU. Just because there library that handles CPU on linux, doesn't mean this CPU designed for servers.
You can run "le linux server" with your 2500k.
Edit: threads like this with little background info and people rushing with their opinions create chaos. Gonna step out.

Also, just because something runs Linux that doesn't make it a server... My gaming system runs linux. Just about every smart TV runs Linux. Android is linux-based. The vast majority of devices that run Linux are not servers, and a very large percent of servers don't run Linux.
So yeah, let's not jump to conclusions that people are making opinions with little background.
This is exactly why I don't understand why Guru3D posts these articles. They post some articles regarding server hardware, but miss out on a bunch of others that are just as interesting (if not more). This is a server CPU, regardless of what this article says. Look up "AMD 32 core Zen" and you'll find sources stating it is either for servers or referred to as an Opteron, which has always been AMD's server (and sometimes workstation) series. Here's one source:

All jokes aside I really hope Zen is going to be something.
