Wonder how long till we get HBM processors from AMD, that have like 8gb HBM shared between the CPU and GPU portions - no need for system ram. That would be excellent... probably in 2017 tho. In the meantime they could at least make their processors efficient enough to have the same models for desktop and mobile. A desktop level APU in a laptop would kick ass.
You're essentially describing what Zen is supposed to be. Hopefully AMD can make it work, but it's going to have to be leaps and bounds better than what Intel has in order for it to make any market penetration at all. Should be out in 2016.

Next console generation probably, or the evolution of zen? hsa is the key, and that won't be around for sometime still, I'd say.

intel have make a very bad attack on low/mid segment, the difference beween APU and IG/CPU are really short right now. on other hand what make me hands up for AMD since last 3 year were the AM1 socket and APU... it is simple, efficient, inexpensive and really powerfull for the price paid. too bad it haven't been developped to be a bit more angry 😛c1:

Yeah I mean Intel definitely has some competitive stuff in that range, but it's priced absurdly high. A Core I5-4300 goes for $280. If AMD can produce a similarly performing part @ 15w they could easily undercut that and still make a killing.

This event is show cases exactly what is AMD's business model. They are chasing the technical prestige rather than what is relevant in current market conditions. That is why if they leave the mass consumer market, they will exist as a think tank; pure R&D. Think back to the pitch they made to the console market; Nano based cfx. All done to get designers thinking outside the box.

Too bad AM1 was DOA.... The AM1 based Athlons are great for what they are. Entry-level quad core processors. Unfortunately, it's a dead platform. It's severely bottlenecked by the single-channel memory controller and 4 PCI Express lanes. It would not have increased cost much at all to give it a dual channel memory controller and at least 8 PCI Express lanes. At least then it would be a more capable platform. Don't get me wrong, I have a system running an Athlon 5350 and it does just fine for what it is. I'm just disappointed that AMD forgot about it after release.
