What I want to see is FPS drops with Intel and AMD CPUs while playing a game and streaming on twitch/youtube/hitbox or whatever.. having music running, browsers open, running voice clients (discord, curse whatever) etc.. okay using OBS or streaming software x264 (CPU) but when playing a CPU intensive game and trying to stream, you will see a good FPS drop, now I know its less of an impact with 6+ core CPUs, but I want to see a comparison. :)
In fact yes this is a good point, how is it's multi-tasking capability, how is it's performance in traditional workloads that a user could come to expect rather than just single application performance benchmarks.

Wait for BIOS and Windows updates Wait for higher clocked Quad Core models, i think if Quad Core and Quad Core SMT models gets "XFR" Turbo between 4.20 and 4.50GHz we will have i5 7600K / i7 7700K Performance @half price

Good, now I am heading back to bed. Damn fever.
Get well soon 🙂. Hopefully AMD and the MB manufacturers will suss out whatever the problem is and fix it as best they can. I think these were primarily positioned as cheaper content creation chips but, if they can fix up the issues they'll stand nicely all around.

That is the one proc I do not have just yet. Grabs phone, calls AMD.
For the off reason they can't, if you need one to use just let me know and I'll get it shipped to you when I get it. I'm not gonna have the rest of my parts or attention to it anyway for awhile(plays Zelda while typing).

Maybe, or maybe not. Personally, I'm really growing tired in all this "maybe", "later", "you need to wait" etc. and thinking about grab some 6 core Intel, instead of Ryzen. Last thing I waiting is 1700 reviews - how it overclock under liquid cooling and manual overclock settings, not that "Auto" stuff. By now AMD need to rename themselves as a "Awaiting Micro Devices" company. You always AWAITS something, improvements and etc. By the way I was REALLY hoping to 8/16 Ryzen to be a HUGE success in GAMING. But, apparently, you need to AWAIT indifferent amount of time to MAYBE see some improvements. PATHETIC. Sorry for being negative, but I disappointed a little. My somewhat high hopes got destroyed.

The 1700x reviews aren't helping. AMD stock keeps tanking. Yesterday prior to embargo lift, stock was at 14.96. It immediately dropped 3% and is now down 15% since launch to 13.26 (as of 9:40 EST). Intel is up slightly. NASDAQ is up slightly. That's not what we want folks.

Thanks for great review. I want to buy 1700 or 1700x, but would like to wait for detailed motherboards tests.

Hilbert did you try using windows' high performance plan and/or core parking disabled? They got much better results on tom's hardware just by using high-performance for windows. Phoronix got better results too by using the performance governor instead of ondemand on linux

Another great view HH! Thank you and get well! Still going 1700/1700x. Just deciding best mobo. Maybe Gigabyte.

Maybe just a claim... but it looks like Nvidia drivers for 1080 were optimized for Intel architecture. It's strange Ryzen CPUs shine in particular in NON-GPU applications... Would have been of much interest a test on an AMD GPU (and AMD drivers) too.

Thanks again H for another great review ,enjoyed reading 🙂 G/W soon 🙂 Good too see SMT off testing . Was windows power plan ,set to high performance during testing as i think i might of read yesterday somewhere that this does indeed help .

Now I'm looking forward to the 1600X as well. I'm very curious to see how it unfolds. I'm actually kind of amazed by the 1700 itself. AMD was able to get a 70 watt performing cpu on 8 cores. Once the BIOs and other new architecture issues are worked out, I think AMD could do well here.

Lots of people are waiting for the 6 and 4 to overclock much better than the 8 cores parts but i don´t know if that´s going to happen. From what i understand, Ryzens best cores, in terms of power usage and clock speed, are all going to be used in the 8 cores variants meaning that the Ryzen cpus with lower cores are going to be worse in everything with the exception of power required and price. So there´s a chance that the 6 and 4 cores parts aren´t going to overclock more than the 8 cores ones. As for the 1700X, it´s boring like the 1800X. The star of this show is the 1700!!! Also if Ryzen really needs Windows, microcode and BIOS updates/revisions to have better gaming performance, this means that AMD ****ed up this launch because Ryzen is still no ready!...

another beautiful day shorting AMD so far im up 12%

I hope that is the case, it would really benefit the business and enterprise users are well if they can get a comparable AMD cpu for about half.

In your overclock conculusion you have. Our ease of overclocking tip: in our findings the more widespread, stable and acceptable overclock is 4.1 GHz on all 8 cores with voltage set to auto. This does apply to the ASUS HERO motherboard we used. That number seems to be the sweet spot that I'd like to recommend to you. Overclocking however always varies per system, PC, ASIC quality, cooling and sure... a bit of luck as well. Should this not be 4.0 GHz? Looks like you forgot to change the value from your 1800x review here.

Get well soon Hilbert. Great review as always , awesome to see finally AMD back in the game and performing extremely well , and all of this do benefit all of us as it will force Intel to lower the exorbitant prices on the 8 cores and 10 cores cpus. Hilbert if you have time and if possible , can you do a quick test overclocking the bus / changing straps / bclock adjustment and with fixed voltage ? Thank you and i hope you recover quick from the flu Boss , drink a lot of natural orange juice and lots of vitamin C + lots of water and rest.

Great review, as always. This is pretty much a 1800x but a £100 cheaper. So next to the 1800x, it looks good. The 1700 will be further £70 cheaper and do exactly the same. So that will most definitely be the cpu to go for. I'm underwhelmed.

Yeah game performance doesn't seem to tally along with the synthetics as well as the SMT - does seem like a compound issue here of scheduling (windows update needed or specific driver for needed the CPU?), GPU driver optimisation (are drivers using general code or have been tailored for particular architecture/instructions and as such not making full use of these new CPUs), power gating and bios/uefi issue, those gamer nexus guys found their supplied motherboards were using early revision bioses which affected performance.
