Good news.. free performance is always good thing. I have unlocked nvidia 6800 12/5 to 16/6 and GTX465 to 470.

I had no idea the 460 was even cut down maybe they had a rx 465 or 560 planned on the refresh if yields where good.

I think no one was under the impression that one could unlock these cards. Big thanks to der8auer and his team for figuring this out. It's always nice to get free performance like this. This just makes the product even better for price vs. performance.

Then... AMD planned a RX465/460X?

I'd have been more surprised if you couldn't unlock it. Both AMD and Nvidia are known to use software/firmware to disable hardware on these cheaper models. As stated by the article, this doesn't guarantee a successful upgrade because some of these chips could have faults in the silicon. It's kind of like the days back when AMD made triple-core CPUs. Many (maybe most) of those CPUs were quad cores with a faulty core, but every once in a while there was a part that was fully functional and was only made into a triple core to meet the demand for them. I personally had one of these triple cores. I could unlock it as a quad core and it would run fully stable, but only with a 32-bit OS. If I did anything 64-bit, it would crash. That being said, even if you unlock one of these GPUs, you could still encounter some sort of failure eventually.

The good old days indeed, here still running a amd 2core unclocked to 4 core and runs stable at original speeds and this already 4 years.
Ah you were one of the lucky ones. The really lucky ones also got the L3 cache. The lottery winners were the ones who unlocked 4 cores (so 6 cores total) and the L3 cache.

Sounds good. A friend of mine recently bought an RX460... Let's hope his model will get an unlocked BIOS as well!

there was insisting rumor about it... the thing that NVidia release gtx1050 that do better for less money might have killed the chicken in the egg. anyway any free boost is nice to have 🙂

WARNING: This BIOS updater (eg: extra performances, stream processors unlocked...) may void warranty, if any videocard is 100% NORMAL - that's FAIR due to the unofficial. Official BIOS updater is for fix issues/bug/abnormal (temperatures, fan, performances...) ONLY. 😉
Been a while since i've seen you ricardonuno1980, made another account again then? http://forums.guru3d.com/member.php?u=137601

Nice gift for RX-460 owners ,free performance is always welcome. I still have a half dead AMD 6950 gpu unlocked to 6970 😀 around somewhere in my bench room.

I hope they fix the driver incompatibility thing without requiring workarounds. Otherwise, unlocking isn't worth the effort required every time you have to upgrade your drivers.

Is the amd 460 worth it for 1080p gaming 60 fps in most modern titles ?

So if I unlock mine, should I worry for another power draw issue? Mine are early model that don't have 6pin PCI power slot. Already behave in somewhat weird stutter manner on 3 hours+ long run, until driver patch that resolves this issue. I'm aware the resource that got unlocked are but mere fraction more. Still, this might had some snowball effect impact on power. Or am I wrong? Since I'm not ready to bleed more money should something bad happen to mine, I guess I'll wait and see how others fare.

The answer to that question is right here http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/asus-radeon-rx-460-strix-gaming-4gb-review.html , Mr. Hilbert Hagedoorn writes this extensives and informative long reviews for a reason , for you to read it and inform yourself about the expected performance of such graphics cards on various resolutions and games , go ahead and do yourself a favor , read it so that you can understand where this 460gpu stands regarding 1080p and 60fps on most modern games.

If I'm not mistaken, that was an issue with the RX 480--a power draw of 150W versus the lesser of 75W. I can't remember the numbers off of the top of my head, but I think a single six-pin is plenty for the RX 460. The main issue is going to be drivers, since not only will you probably have to reinstall them, but for the time being, you're limited to pre-ReLive drivers, less you use a workaround.

Be careful unlocking extra cores, silicon chip might be faulty there or have poor quality. They usually select silicon chips and divides them depending on their quality. Just be aware about it. It's not only marketing stuff.

it is clearly not a bad GPU but the GTX1050 do a bit better and cost 20 to 40 Euro less... also it is a bit weak for lot of big hit and you would have to lower a bit detail, but the GTX1050 would be the same. the only exeption is the RX460 1 fan sapphire with 2 gig at promo sale price of 80 Euro (other version are more expensive (too much i would said)). for few more buck you could get the RX470 4g or the GTX1060 3g depending on your country wich is the best possible choise for 1080P gaming.
