Does this also increase the memory clock speeds too as the 4GB version has a lower memory clock than the 8GB variant.

Wow, released sooner than expected.

Yes, if it has 8GB of memory it's 8 Gbps ICs.

Id say its a dick move from AMD. I bet theyre plan was to offer 8gb cards for 199 in the beginning if they can afford to do this bs.

Yes  ATI TEK (or ATI/AMD) doesn't change since then -> Just Evolved. - GDDR - Mantle = DX12/Vulcan - HBM - GPU Open But we know that already :book: Ahh i remeber that Times 🤓

Seriously! How dare amd give you more than you payed for!? I say all those plagued with extra vram should demand that amd recalls the card and have them lazer cut some of the ram!

I think the point is that they are charging you more money to buy the 8GB one when there is no difference in the physical cards which is pretty shady to me. Why even release the 4GB one?

We don't know what kind of profit margins they're getting on these 4GB models, to be fair. They probably rushed this first batch out to meet the release date knowing they'd be taking a hit on their bottom line by reflashing 8GB models. It clearly isn't economically viable for them to do this permenently.

You didnt get my point. As I said they probably planed the 8gb version for 199 and later just changed their mind about it. You are basically paying 40$ for just different bios. I bet they even will drop the price if 1060 will cost similarly but that would be a spitting on early adopters.

How would you know that you got 8GB on 4GB card? Remove cooler, void warranty and check. Sure, there are ways around the warranty problem but the basic Joe will probably either buy 4gb or 8gb model and wont touch anything. On the bright side, enabling more memory will make card draw more power. Who knows, maybe you get a burnt PCIe for free 🙂

This is only for the reference cards. AIB partners I bet will have true 4GB/8GB cards. I am sure AMD did this so they could adjust stock on the fly and have lower cost to market. Easier to assemble a single card and just change a sticker. Plus some people are not going to want to flash a new bios and just want 8GB from the start.

AMD did this to avoid the 4GB model being a paper launch. It's clearly not ideal for AMD to be doing it.

I got your point but I doubt that this is the case as only some of them actually have 8Gb physically. They probably just wanted to meet demand even if at a lower profit margin.

I wonder how much does it actually cost for a manufacturer to put a bigger vram. Or phone memory since a jump in memory for phones can go up by quite a bit in $ when fast sd cards and usb flash memory arr so cheap now a days.
