Quite bizarre, considering even the Hawaii architecture of 200 series supported DX12, to some extent. Back then DX12 was of absolutely no use, but you'd think AMD would have perfected it by Polaris, considering the early start. I guess it was the lack of budget that prevented completing it.

unfortunately, Polaris has no support for conservative rasterization, so it misses the hardware requirements for feature level 12_1.

with ridiculous pricing of graphics card and poor beta testing before game releases ,pc gaming makes no sense anyway. adding this feature level nonsense to game requirements will make things even worse. on the other hand micsoft requires tpm 2.0 among other ,to install its newer os...

The title of this article is wrong, its phrased like AMD have done something to prevent 400/500 series cards running this game when in reality its the developers of Forspoken who have made the choice not to support them.

That would mean that Nvidia cards that dont support 12.1 also cant run this "game"

So far as I know, this game runs badly on any hardware, so Polaris users could expect 5-10FPS, so what point of trying even... Like, 4090 renders 80ish. So what would be Polaris scores?
data/avatar/default/avatar05.webp
that's a developer choice, not driver related.

No, you're wrong. The developers have targeted and use Feature Level 12_1, Polaris does not support this feature level. Linux can play the game on VKD3D because it lies about the feature level and emulates some unsupported hardware features in an alternative vulkan way.

Correct, Maxwell V1 and Kepler crash after the menu.

I'm always surprised when developers do not implement a fallback, if the feaure isnt explcitly necessary to do what you want why limit your customer base?

Despite the fact that the Nvidia 900 series can run Forspoken, the Polaris GPUs cannot due to their lack of DirectX 12 1 support. That means no support for AMD Radeon RX series 400 and 500.... AMD Polaris (RX 400/500) users unable to play Forspoken
This is bad for day zero... But i would temper this with the game in itself that is really not as good as the hype could make you think. It's more another Lost Ark or Elder Ring: Now that the hype is over, no one remember those game...

They list the RX 5500XT and GTX 1060 so a rare occasion that minimum system requirements make sense. Tech tubers that trashed the 6500XT and told people to buy Polaris instead:

If Polaris graphics cards haven't got enough muscle to run it anyway, does it really matter?

It sucks for those that already bought it on the hype... ... but in reality, nothing is lost by not playing this failure.

I think its wise to keep in mind that while hawaii/fiji/polaris "only" makes the cut for full 12_0 compliance, they do support more than that, there are things they support that maxwell 2 does not, its easy to look in hindsight and say that it was a mistake, but I'm pretty sure that amd nor nvidia knew exactly what 12_1 was going to look like when they started developing their architectures. also polaris is gfx8 archtecture like tonga/fiji, with some enhancements, which is an important detail ,since vega was supposed to be launched in 2016 and it includes 12_1, could be argued that polaris was a stopgap measure.

I'd wager you can probably play the game sub 1080p on low settings, probably wont be getting much more than 30 fps, but its probably "playable"

My advice, sell those cards for mining.

Is this just speculation because the game for some reason does not start, or is there actually an error message saying that it requires DX12_1? I have not seen any review or developer stating it requires DX12_1 either.

It is not speculation when the game doesn't start without forcing VKD3D-Proton to report FL 12_1 (which it doesn't do by default also on capable GPUs yet).
