That's a terrible naming scheme

There needs to be a total change up in the naming.. Should be named by shaders R1792G3 R2048G3 R2048G6 XR4096G6

Whats a Celeron? Even the Pentium would draw mostly blank responses, you would literally have to say Intel Pentium and even then the vast majority of people would not know or care. Someone even mentioned above people would know, i3, i5, i7, I can tell you the vast majority would not. What I am trying to say is the the vast majority is uninformed and really does not care to be informed, they rely on others who have some knowledge to basically tell them 'This is what you want'.
I can tell you that in this day and age, A LOT of people know what core i3-i7 are. Most of my friends or even family members when ask me for advice always go "core i5 is good right? but isn't i7 better, should I go with that?" AMD just doesn't have that "ring" to it.

Its all comes down to marketing really.

can someone explain to me what's the commotion with the naming? is it because of the past ATi Radeon 9700?

I quite often get answered dell or HP or Acer when I ask what CPU do they have :stewpid:... It just makes me ROFL

Well Im not surprised they are doing this but I expected this to happen after the HD9XXX series came out. Hopefully they will come up with a new naming scheme that isnt so uh confusing as this looks like it would be.

The price tag will usually tell you which Radeon you're buying anyway...
like this comment 🙂 but yeah, AMD sure know how to confuse customers..

I know lets get some publicity and give our marketing team some work... Let's change the name scheme!!! Perhaps even some might not know what they are buying...:) It could work... For gods sake does it take much brain power to choose a naming scheme and stick to it? What a waste of time...and money..

So what's wrong with RADEON HD 9970/9990 followed by 10970/10990 then 11970/11990, etc., etc.?
https://forums.guru3d.com/data/avatars/m/115/115462.jpg
Oh so, how about a Radeon R9-9999? Nope, needs more 9s.
https://forums.guru3d.com/data/avatars/m/54/54834.jpg
They should just name it AMD 4K2013... AMD 4K2014... AMD 4K2015 lol pretty sure with that naming scheme consumers will be more prone to upgrading.. zomg my video card is outdated by a year!

hmm how about this 9970 to 997 9950 to 995 9870 to 987 9850 to 985 you get the idea, just remove the last zero, its simple, higher number means better performance. anyway, let the poo flinging continue

If anything, they should keep the "HD" label (was a brilliant choice on their part) and just label it "HD-NG xxxx", with the "NG" standing for "Next Generation"; or "UHD xxxx" signifying it for the Ultra High Definition era, or something similar.

Truthfully the same could be said for Intel.
Considering Intel has 73.8% of the consumer processor market and are gaining every quarter, I don't think it could.
And if anyone thinks our economy is recovering, you've been "had" by the lies and deceit being published in the news. We are currently at the highest rate ever in American History where American citizens are currently on or applying for food stamps and its been rising and rising and rising each year.
I'm glad someone around here gets it. People think the economy is improving because the stock market is at a record high. But the facts are the Federal Reserve in the past 5 years has printed $80,000,000,000 every single month and all this liquidity is being dumped into the stock market because there's no other place for it to go. But by doing this while keeping interest rates at close to 0%, it's just setting things up the worst economic crash EVER. When the money printing ends, interest rates will skyrocket past 20%, causing the dollar to crumble.... taking every single working persons savings and assets and making them worthless. What's scary is the fact that Obama is doing this intentionally under the guise of social and economic justice. Why do you think he used the Dodd/Frank financial reform bill to take over the banks? Or Obamacare to get government's dirty hands on your healthcare dollars in order to skyrocket costs and to FORCE hard working people to pay insane monthly premiums just so the government can take that money and give all the lazy people on government assistance free health care. It's all about screwing over those who work to pay for those who don't. Americans are arming themselves faster today than any time in our nations history. We are well aware of what this SOB is up to.

AMD-HD-970? (I guess the original with that R9 thing would be 9th Generation and then the 9 series and 70 model or some such, thus r9-970, it kinda works as well)

'HD-NG' is too mouthful, and 'UHD' will make them sound like used car salesmen. Although I don't get why they had the need to change the naming scheme for their GPU line (that, IMO, serves as a differentiator from their CPU-related products), R9-XXXX makes sense. Like Lane said, AMD have E for embedded, A for APU, so why not R for Radeon? R9 probably means Radeon series 9, and that actually identifies the series as concise as possible compared to HD 9000. An unneeded change? Probably. But an entirely confusing one? Nope, unless someone's really THAT thick.

I think what confusing is how the article have no concrete detail on the new naming scheme yet trying to make a news out of it by guessing on the new naming scheme with few 'rather redundant example'.
