They are expensive indeed... but these things should completely rip to shreds anything before them in most workloads (except for gaming, which they are not targeted to)
Intel's highest end 18-core HEDT (old or new) has no chance in hell of competing with these things. The rest of their lineup is practically DOA.
And 3990X will be obscenely powerful... but looking at these prices, it will probably also cost $4999 or something like that.

googled old news for 9900k, it was 488USD per 1K units and that was its retail price too in amazon, newegg etc, plus minus 10-20usd here or there.
So we can expect sub 1K USD price in N.A.
Still even if TR3 24c is 400USD more, if it beats the 18 core Intel in gaming [i want mixedload system] then its worth it, plus TR3 is brand new platform, meaning its future proof for at least next iteration of TR, it has kinda more PCIe lanes, PCIe Gen 4.0, but the motherboards will be insanely expensive, because even right now x570 boards cost more then equally branded [same series] Intel x299 boards.
On the otehr hand if the Info from Intel is real that the 18 core is great overclocker and can do 5.1Ghz on AIO on all core, even thou the x299 platform is dead, if it overclocks great and games better then TR3, then it can be kept for 2 generations, who said i need a new system/CPU next year i can keep the 18 core till 2021 or even 2022, basically until Intel comes with 10nm or 7nm HEDT.
I kinda want AMD, since my last one was 1090T, but money is not infinite and since i don't want two systems, gaming performance is important, even if to achieve said performance Intel needs to be overclocked [I plan on custom loop anyway]
Like you said, we need to wait for real reviews and benchmarks, cant wait 🙂
Thats actual price, ignore the "per 1K", to be sure i just Kaarme

Not really expensive. When base clock for 24C/48T moves from 3.0 to 3.8GHz while increasing price from $1300 to $1400, I call it big improvement in total performance per $.

hoping $1499 for 3970x ... then build "current" dream WS
looking at this and mobo price, well not really cheaper than intel hedt build in intel-era
guess pc-parts high-end price-tag border will be always like that
complete build cost around $3000++ (considering cpu(3960x)+mobo alone is already around $2000)
