cold fries w/weak sauce and of course the new TR is in the wings which will smoke this like a proud papa handing out cigars. Intel c'mon man. this chipset will be too expensive (as will the CPUs) and the costs associated w/ this is money down the drain if it wasn't for the procedural upgrade this represents and the lead-in to the next gen. Sapphire Rapids is as much of a placeholder as Alder Lake, but it won't have the ecosystem to back it up like AL. i have zero regrets for leaving Intel HEDT behind. i also have zero regrets for leaving TR behind as it'd become more pro than pro/am and the capabilities (like the Sapphire Rapids) have become far more than i need at home now that "moar cores" is the standard in the consumer market.

Well yeah... of course it's going to be slower than a 13900K in Geekbench. I really wish that "test" would just go away - it means nothing yet it's commonly used for cherry-picked results.

Assuming you had a need for HEDT, what'd you end up opting for instead? While mainstream sockets are quite potent, they still pale in comparison to HEDT. Kinda weird to say that... where 16c/32t is now deemed low-end for HEDT.

Well he more or less said that mainstream is now good enough for him. A Threadripper 3970x can more or less be replaced by a 7950x. 4 years ago Threadripper was needed for a lot of workloads, but now there are multiple "good enough" alternatives.

I've waited years for this. I use a single machine for gaming and work. I need all the PCIe lanes I can get. x4 Optane P5800X boot drive x8 100 Gbps ConnectX-4 NIC 4x PCIe 5.0 NVMe RAID0 x16 PCIe 4.0 GPU The AMD drivers are also broken for NVMe RAID and do not support TRIM. They also don't support booting from a non-RAID OS drive while you also have a RAID storage volume. Intel's VROC and RST RAID both support TRIM. They also support separate non-RAID and RAID drives simultaneously.
