There have been numerous reports in recent years about the possibility of remasters of older Grand Theft Auto games. It has been reported by Kotaku that these are more than just rumors, and that GTA producer Rockstar Titles is genuinely working on remastered versions of three different games.

Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto San Andreas are the games in question. The exact nature of this is not known at this time. The gaming engine in question would be Unreal Engine, which would employ a "combination of classic and new graphic approaches," according to the developers. One source would have already seen footage of the game in action.

Kotaku has reached out to Rockstar to inquire about these remastered games as well as potential GTA re-releases in the future. However, our sources have shown to be trustworthy in the past, alerting us to upgrades in GTA Online and Red Dead Online weeks, if not months, in advance of the official release.

This information comes from individuals who claim that Rockstar is now working on remastered versions of Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Using the Unreal Engine, all three of these games are being remastered, and the final product will be a blend of "new and old graphics." Several sources who claim to have taken a sneak peek at a game in action have stated that the visuals resembled a heavily-modified version of a vintage Grand Theft Auto game. The user interface (UI) for the games is also being redesigned, but it will preserve the same vintage design. There were no specifics given about the gameplay, but Kotaku has learned that these restored titles are making an effort to be as faithful as possible to the GTA games from the PlayStation 2 period.

They would need to be launched on a variety of platforms — including the Nintendo Switch — in order to be successful. Other systems listed are the PlayStation 4 and 5, the Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, Google's Stadia, mobile platforms, and, of course, the PC — which is to say, virtually all of them. The consoles are expected to be unveiled in October or early November, while the PC versions will not be revealed until early next year at the earliest. Furthermore, the level of popularity of the three remasters may influence the decision on whether or not other titles will be remastered in the near future.
