The Radeon RX 7600, AMD's first mid-range GPU built on the RDNA 3 architecture, has been launched with mostly positive feedback, albeit a slight issue has been observed with its reference design.
This problem involves an incompatibility with some 6+2-pin power cables, which AMD is promptly addressing with a design adjustment to enable universal power cable compatibility. It should be stressed that this issue only impacts a select group of power supplies and is not widespread. Additionally, it's confined to the reference model of the Radeon RX 7600 from AMD, which is currently distributed exclusively to content creators and has not been released to the general public yet.
AMD stated, “We are content with the global availability of Radeon RX 7600 cards through our AIB partners. We expect the RX 7600 reference cards to be obtainable in the near future, featuring a design that is compatible with all power cables."
The issue at hand involves power connectors that have been in use for several years across a range of video card models, making it an unusual circumstance. Delving further, the 6+2-pin power cable doesn't align perfectly with AMD's reference graphics card for the Radeon RX 7600. This issue does not seem to be present in models from partner manufacturers, such as Gigabyte, ASUS, and MSI.
No similar problems have been reported with Radeon RX 7600 units produced by AMD's partners. Notably, many modern card designs draw from their predecessors, utilizing designs that have demonstrated success. AMD's reference design, known as MBA (Made by AMD), faces compatibility issues with certain power cables. Specifically, some 6+2-pin cables may not insert fully into the card due to the backplate design, an issue that only affects cables with a small protrusion that is blocked by the backplate's extension. AMD has provided a statement to TechPowerUP, one of the first to spotlight the issue, promising that the upcoming RX 7600 MBA design will be compatible with all power cables.
