New Pascal GP104 (GeForce GTX 1070 and 1080) GPU Die Photos Surface
Earlier some photos already leaked, however there are new photos available on mainstream to high-end Pascal GPU under codename GP104. The photos are showing the GP104 GPU would be the successor to the GM204 and thus will replace the GeForce GTX 970/980.
According to the leak the photo shown below is the GP104-200-A1 (GM204 successor) intended for Nvidia's pending high-end products, and it measures roughly 290-300mm². At the right side you can see Samsung GDDR5 chips, earlier already spotted as 1.5V 8Gb 8Gbps (running 8000MHz as effective data-rate) GDDR5. Word on the street is that this 16nm fabbed Pascal architecture based GPU would hold 2560 shader processors.
NVIDIA GeForce | Possible name |
Pascal | Fab | Board | Date | |
GTX Titan X | >> | TBD | GP 100 | 16nm | Reference -> AIB | TBD |
GTX 980Ti | >> | GTX 1080 Ti | GP 104-400 | 16nm | Reference -> AIB | June/July |
GTX 980 | >> | GTX 1080 | GP 104-200 | 16nm | Reference -> AIB | June |
GTX 970 | >> | GTX 1070 | GP 104-150 | 16nm | AIB design | June |
GTX 960 | >> | GTX 1060 | GP 106 | 16nm | AIB design | October |
GTX 950 | >> | GTX 1050 | GP 106 | 16nm | AIB design | October |
The rectangular die of the GP104 was measured at 15.35 mm x 19.18 mm which should house (very speculative) a transistor-count of 7.4~7.9 billion. Interesting to see is that this chip is tied towards Samsung 8-gigabit GDDR5 memory chips. These ICs run an effective speed of 8 GHz (GDDR5 and thus not GDDR5X). At 256-bit you'd be looking at 256 GB/s of bandwidth. The shader processor core count of the GP104 should be closer to 2,560, opposed to the 4,096 indicated from an older report.
If we chart things up (and the chart below ids very speculative) we see the following. BTW the GP104-400 for the Ti might very well become a GP100 based SKU, which would make more sense
Earlier on it was speculated that graphics cards based on these GPUs would be called X70 and X80, the specs do not meet up even slightly though. The new photos are courtesy of Asia region based Chiphell and seem to be originating from an early engineering sample.
Days ago a photo also leaked of what could be the GeForce GTX 1080 cooler.

The initial leaks I saw reported ~2500 cores. There were leaks after that of a Ti variant that the ~4000 came from I guess.
It's possible that a Ti/Titan (cut down variant of the GP100) launches way later in the year with that many cores. But there is no way that's coming in June.

So are people actually thinking the 1080 Ti is going to launch close to the 1070 and 1080? In the past, the x80 Ti cards have come after the launch of the Titan...

Look at 6xx series release. I think this is going to follow closer to that. I don't think there will be a 1080Ti. Just a Titan, which will be a cut down GP100, similar to the original Titan.
Next year they'll do a 7xx similar release. GP100 on the top, copying the Titan X. 1180Ti will be slightly cut down or w/e the 780Ti was to the Titan X. And the rest will follow.

So, this is the little brother.
I don't know why they would bring any 1080-Ti before AMD get something out there. No reason to challenge your own product.
Any prospect on Polaris 11 vs 1080 ?
VEGA vs XXX-Ti early 2017 ?

The initial leaks where probably exaggerated BS. This seems to be much closer to the initial "they will both milk 14nm" idea.
