Monitor Shweetness Ultra High Definition ASUS PQ321 arrives in the testlab

It surely took us a while to obtain one, here in the EU these monitors are rare and actually the EU model do not have HDMI, just DP. However I was finally able to obtain a 4K - Ultra High Definition 3840 x 2160 monitor. We feel it is the next big thing as game companies and software houses have noticed this trend and in the upcoming months we'll be seeing Ultra HD texture packs for a handful of games. Yeah, imaging that, gaming at 3840 x 2160 with extremely high texture quality.

The PQ321 is a True native 4K UHD Monitor allowing Ultra HD at a 3840 x 2160 @ 60Hz resolution. Basically the screen exists out of two tiles screens making the big whopper resolution. To get a grasp of that, that's the same as four Full HD displays stacked side-by-side. So yeah, you'll be needing serious amounts of GPU horsepower.

  • 1280x720 = 0.9 MPixels
  • 1600x1200 =1.9 Mpixels
  • 1920x1080 =2.0 MPixels
  • 2560x1440 = 3.7 MPixels
  • 3840 x 2160 = 8.2 Mpixels (!)

We'll be playing with this monitor and a wide variety of graphics cards in the upcoming week. So late next week you can join me in a nice overview of the monitor, then do some regular benchmarking at UHD and then some FCAT results.

To get you an idea how big the desktop space is, look at MSI AftBurner, and then realise how big it looks on your screen and then on this  3840 x 2160 resolution.

For now, here are a couple of photo's just to get them 3840 x 2160 juices flowing. The monitor is so big that I took it home and decided to do some photo's in the garden. Have a great weekend you guys, I know I will :)

Yes and no ... If you want to use AA, it's not gonna be enough. 3840x2160 = 4x FullHD. However, with the resolution so high, AA could be considered obsolete. If you would disable AA, then you might pull it off.

Looking at that desktop screenshot, that resolution looks like too much. I bet it's sweet for gaming though. What setup are you running into that screen? I can't think of a rig that will run 4k smooth enough in a year's time.
