Intel To Delay Cannonlake processors towards late 2018

Intel To Delay Cannonlake processors towards late 2018

After a tumuluous year with multiple architecture releases within the desktop processor segment, it seems that Intel will be slowing things down a little. Cannonlake (not to confuse with coffee lake) would be delayed to late 2018.

Cannonlake are based on 10nm and where expected in the first half of 2018, according to sources from the upstream supply chain reports digitimes:

Some vendors are even considering skipping Cannon Lake to wait for the release of its successor, the Ice Lake CPUs, which according to Intel's roadmap, should be available shortly after the specific processors' rescheduled launch, the sources said.

Commenting on the market speculation, Intel said that the company will be shipping its first 10nm products near the end of 2017 beginning with a lower volume SKU followed by a volume ramp in the first half of 2018.

After experiencing five consecutive years of shipment declines, demand for notebooks has grown stable in 2017. Industry players hope that Intel's new 10nm Cannon Lake CPUs - which are expected to see up to 25% performance improvement and 45% less power consumption compared to existing 14nm Kaby Lake processors - can rejuvenate the notebook market, the sources pointed out.

Most notebook vemdors have already begun their request for quotation (RFQ) processes for 2018 notebook orders, but they now may have to revise their notebook plans, the sources said.

iPads/iPhones

Like I get people want to point the blame at Intel but realistically laptops are in a much better state today than they ever were. The surface is mostly the reason for it - there has been an increase in higher quality, higher resolution displays married with chassis of decent build quality/SSDs. They're also fairly affordable. Problem is that most family/friends I know have ditched the PC for daily browsing and switched to either using their phones or a tablet.

Im with you on that most people are using Desktop replacement Laptops for either playing games with a gaming laptop or surfing the web and checking email and watching Youtube with either their phones or a tablet or a Laptop Tablet Hybrid such as a surface. Its not Intel or AMD's fault its just consumers are going away from purchasing a PC to a tablet. Or Users are going away from Desktop computers to Laptops. To me the Surface's price is outrageous. For that amount of money you can get an ultra book based Laptop or a Surface alternative such as those tablet/Laptop hybrids that ASUS makes.
