Intel Haswell-E X99 Chipset Details And Launch Time
We have talked about the Intel Haswell-E X99 Chipset quite a bit in the past already. Now more details have surfaced. Basically the X99 chipset which has codename Wellsburg will be released in the June timeframe, Computex anyone ? New to the list is confirmed support for DDR4 memory.
X99 chipset will support low voltage (1.2V) DDR4 RAM kits (must be the 1333 MHz ones). The DIMM connector now has 288 pins (as opposed to 284 from earlier), the 4 additional pins added to support NVDIMM modules. Good news is that both 284/288 pin RAM modules will be usable on motherboards with the 284 pin connector or the new 288 pin connector. It will have 14 USB ports and 10 Sata ports. Interestingly it will also feature Intel’s Integrated Clock Support.
Both the 6 core and 8 core processor versions will get a 140 W TDP and a maximum memory speed of 2133Mhz per DIMM slot. Haswell-E will bring a new version of your same old LGA 2011 socket with it. Dubbed LGA 2011-3, the derived socket has the same dimensions and ball pattern pitch as LGA 2011. Basically, the number of pins remains the same while their layout changes. According to the slides, the new design is more efficient as per Intel’s research, and additional wings in the LGA 2011-3 socket help improve package handling.

Yes APUs are not good for gaming now unless you are 4k gamer where GPU is bottleneck or you believe in strong push towards Mantle.
But... While there is no APU on market which would with any kind of OC beat my old poor i5@4.5GHz in standard operations, there is no questioning about drastic improvements on some fronts and that HSA capable applications like OpenOffice run considerably faster on APUs than i5/i7 CPUs.
AMD made kind of futureproof FX8350 CPU as at time of its release there were no games capable to use all cores and till now My i5@4,5GHz was better in most of games. (I got it because I did not intend to keep such CPU more than 3 years anyway)
And at time I'll replace it it will still be better in most of games I'll be playing at given time. But FX8350 owners have good CPU which will handle games few years after I'll be forced to replace.
And APUs are similar to that in its own way (not gaming way, but productivity). If AMD can make mobile kaveri soon enough I get one for development.
And I plan to get 6core i5 if that comes by. As HT is still not good enough and only real benefit is from additional L3.
As for DDR4, they should provide up to 50% bonus in bandwidth, 20% decrease in power consumption and mass production price should be around 20% higher than DDR3. I would rather go for HBM which costs twice as much but delivers much higher bandwidth.
This intel's step is in relatively good direction for gamers. But IPC is still main decision maker for me. In the end I need every little bit of CPU power to get 120fps@120Hz.
But now imagine change in my needs if unreal engine started to support Mantle/DX12 and this powerful CPU would no longer be needed. Intel then can make 12Core+HT CPU and no dog will bark on it. In such case i would be sitting on same CPU for next 3 years or till I burn it from boredom as I'll buy another product from AMD (while under performing, much more interesting to mess with).

Been waiting for this, the question is what will they charge for the 8 core cpu? will the 6 core be the norm and the 8 extreme? Anyhow I will be getting the 8 core regardless but i will hold out till around October for some decent boards and maybe a new stepping.
