Download: Quake II RTX Download version 1.2

For those interested, I have added Quake II RTX towards our file-mirror. NVIDIA is revamping Id Software's 1997 hit game Quake II with RTX path-traced global illumination. The game has been updated towards v1.2 today, you'll need the 441.41 drivers released today as well.

Just played a few levels on a GTX 1080.
It definitely works, but needs resolution scaling option set to 25% minimum to sustain decent fps, meaning everything is very blurry...

But well, it works.

Guess it will need next gen RTX 3000 series for a good experience.

I guess that depends on res, of course. But don't get your hopes up too high, I personally doubt that the Nvidia's next gen cards will miraculously net more than double the RTX performance of Turing cards. Might be wrong ofc, but still, I don't see it happen.

Don't forget it will be 7nm.

They can cram A LOT MORE transistors for those RT cores... they could easily make 5 times more RT cores than current gen if they wanted to.

I was wondering what type of RTX performance increase to expect from next gen RTX cards.

I think they can make it easily 4x or 8x perf. Maybe even more. But I dont expect anything beyond the underwhelming 2x from the company

Why do you assume that RTX 2000 does not have a decent performance since you played on GTX 1080???
I played on RTX 2080Ti (so no RTX3000) - QHD resolution at 60 - 70 fps depending of what happened on the screen...I would define this a good experience...

How's that high horse feeling? Smug enough?

What about the rest of us who can't afford an $1200 videocard ?

It isn't about this - you skipped RTX 2000 generation - it was just an observation...

And why do you assume that RTX3000 will be cheap??? - somebody at nvidia needs new leather jackets for all year so I would not go that far and said that the next generation will be more affordable than the present one.

The only reason why next generation would be cheaper is AMD - if their Ray tracing implementation will be good and they will finally have an enthusiast high end card then nvidia cards will be affordable (not cheap, affordable), if not....

Hey at least when Ampere gets here, NVIDIA would have had almost 2 years of experience working with RT. It'll only get better and cheaper.

8700K @ 4.7
MSI GTX 2070 Super Gaming X
Running at 1080p G-sync.
Just downloaded version 1.2 now

Using the new 441.41 driver and running around the first level I'm getting between 75 - 85 fps with the dynamic scaling turned off. With the scaling turned on I could set a target fps, but it makes the image too blurry and you're forced to disable the temporal AA. It's very playable tho.

Yes, but performance is abysmal.

Can't remember when they added it in the drivers, but it wasn't very long ago.
Uses the shader cores to do RT calculations, which obviously isn't anywhere near as efficient as dedicated hardware... but it can be done.

See this article for example:
https://www.guru3d.com/news-story/crytek-releases-neon-noir-ray-tracing-benchmark.html

Raytracing is not limited to RTX cards.. they simply do it faster, that is all.
(but still not fast enough... yet)

I am so happy for RTX owners that they finally have something to play.

That's a bit of an exaggeration. The game is quite playable on a 2080Ti @ 1440p 100% resolution. Also playable with 2070's and 2080's with resolution scale or just 1080p.
