AMD Ryzen 7040 Series: Differences Between 7040H and 7040HS Explained. The introduction of the 7040HS and 7040H variants, which share almost identical specifications, has caused confusion within the computer hardware community. However, AMD has recently provided clarification regarding the purpose of their -HS and -H markers.

In an update to the product pages this month, AMD disclosed that the Ryzen 7040H series is exclusively intended for the Chinese market, while the closely related Ryzen 7040HS series will be available in North America, EMEA, APJ, and LATAM regions.

Leading manufacturers such as ASUS, Lenovo, and Machenike are preparing to launch new laptop models in China featuring the Ryzen 7040H APUs. Interestingly, some of these models, as reported by VideoCardz, will not include discrete graphics and will instead have a higher Thermal Design Power (TDP) of 65 W.

The primary difference between the Ryzen 7040H and 7040HS lies in their regional availability, which has caused confusion among consumers. AMD has confirmed that the 'H' variant is specifically designated for the Chinese market, while the 'HS' variant is allocated for the rest of the world. The Ryzen 7040 series, AMD's latest laptop processors, are built on the Zen 4 architecture and Phoenix silicon. The specifications of these processors can vary based on TDP (7040U/7040U/Ryzen Z1) or the socket (FP7/FP8, etc.).

There has been considerable confusion surrounding the 7040H/HS models due to their departure from previous generations. The Zen 3-based Ryzen 5000HS series, for example, offered a lower default power of 35 W, similar to Intel's Tiger Lake-H35 series, providing less headroom compared to the 5000H-series with a default TDP of 45 W. This pattern also applied to the 6000HS and 6000H SKUs. However, the situation with the Ryzen 7040HS and 7040H series is less clear, as their specifications, including CPU and GPU clocks and TDP, are largely similar.

Minor discrepancies in official specifications, such as the availability of AMD EXPO for 7940HS but not for 7940H, could be attributed to occasional inaccuracies on the company's website. An update on AMD's website clarified that the Ryzen 7040H series is exclusively intended for Mainland China, while the 7040HS will be available in North America, EMEA, APJ, and LATAM regions.

The recent announcement of new laptops by Lenovo, ASUS, and Machenike utilizing Ryzen 7040H APUs for the Chinese market highlights the need for a deeper understanding of the differences between the two series. Interestingly, some of these laptops will not feature discrete graphics and will operate with a higher TDP of 65 W.
