Core i7 Hexa Core Laptop Processor Details and Benchmarks Surface

Some specifications for the pending Core i7 hexacores for laptops have surfaced onto the web through a Chinese forum, it invokes an engineering sample, that would be the Core i7-8700HQ series.

The screenshots have been published on Chinese website Tieba and reveal a number of CPU related details, indeed showing the hexacore CPU.

The processor will get a 45 Watt TDP, which is quite a lot for a laptop. While the full name still has to be revealed, the users declared this proc the i7-8720HK. It's fitted with 9MB cache and has a base clock of 2.4GHz, with a boost to 3.6GHz boost. With Intel everything is fuzzy, so yes, that would be turbo mode 3.0 and just one thread at that turbo. The all core turbo would be 3.4 GHz.

  • CPU-Z Single thread score: 371
  • CPU-Z Multi-thread score: 2414
  • Fritz Chess Benchmark score: 10544

When you compare a thing or two, it tables up like so, mind you that the naming and specs remain unconfirmed:

CPU Core i7-8700HQ  Core i7-7700HQ
Cores/Threads 6/12 4/8
Clock speed 2.4 GHz 2.8 GHz
Turbo 1 core 3.4 GHz 3.8 GHz
Turbo all cores 2.9 GHz 3.4 GHz
Cache 9MB 6MB

I'd assume due to such low clock speeds the 4 core processor would still be better in most situations. Though dx12 titles and programs that have good muti-thread might make better use of the cores... will be very power hungry mind you, limited to the gaming laptops most likely. nice to least see laptops change too

Id say not good for gaming laptops, they have a big enough issue dissipating the heat from quad core CPUs let alone six cores. It would just end up throttling earlier than an i7 so drop to an even lower speed.

When Intel gets on 10nm I bet these will be pretty great but until then thermals are a bit much.

Well it depends on what version of the quad core cpu you are talking about. The HK or the unlocked version of the CPU where you can overclock it there is where you might see issues. I have seen an issue with a gaming laptop with an 7700HK that was on Linus tech tips and it was OCed to 4.4ghz and that OC was not stable because there was thermal throttling up the wazoo so he had to back the OC to 4.2ghz and it was fine. The HQ CPUs you can OC them any further than what the Turbo boost does so less heat than the HK. Also the cooling inside gaming laptops are very well done. My MSI gaming laptop the cooling is very good. So I am sure laptop manufacturers will be able to keep heat to a minimum. Look at AMD they have a mobile 8 core Ryzen cpu thats in one of ASUS's laptops.

Strongly disagree, run a same for same CPU in a desktop and laptop, crank up the ambient temp and see which throttles first, case closed.
