Apple to launch a 31.6-inch 6K monitor based on mini LED

Apple to launch a 31.6-inch 6K monitor based on mini LED

The monitor would be released later this year, likely Q3 and gets a screen diagonal of 31.6 inches versus a 6K resolution. The backlight will use roughly 500 LEDs with roughly 600 microns size from the Japanese Nichia. Mind you that mini LED is not the same as micro LED.

TF Securities’ Ming-Chi Kuo has released a report which lays out Apple’s product interest in mini-LED technology. Kuo says that Apple will launch a 31.6-inch (6K resolution) external display in the second or third quarter of 2019 and feature a mini-LED backlight.

Apple is motivated by mini LED backlighting's support for wide color gamut, high contrast ratio, high dynamic range and local dimming for product differentiation, Kuo was widely cited by the local press as disclosing. Strictly speaking, this is a quasi-mini LED BLU because the chip size is much larger than those of standard mini LEDs, according to industry sources. However, the use of such a BLU will give opportunities for the supply chain makers to improve mini LED production in cost and yield rate, the sources from DigiTimes notes. Kuo describes the new monitor as a "6k3k" display.

Likely the resolution will match the price, to be continued.

Being Apple of course "It's not a device, it's a fashion statement!".

As I understand it, the price on Apple Cinema Display monitors was so high because they had very strict standards. A lot of the panels that were good, but didn't quite measure up were repackaged into cheap-o monitors by Korean companies and sold on eBay (Catleap, QNIX, etc.). Not sure if it's still a thing, but this is why there were so many 27" monitors for $300 back when Apple was selling theirs for $800ish.

So if that situation is repeated, the "almost good enough" units might be sold off cheap, if you're willing to take a little risk by ordering a monitor off ebay from Korea.

"Likely the resolution will match the price" , or the price will match and catch the resolution, most probably :)
