AMD Zen chipset issue To Increase Mobo Cost
Albeit a little really. AMD's chipsets for Zen-based processors, which AMD outsourced to ASMedia for R&D, are rumored to be seeing design issues, which will increase motherboard players' costs by US$2-5, according to sources from the motherboard industry.
AMD's Zen processors are seeing stable development and have a satisfactory yield rate, and about to enter the engineering sample stage in the near future. However, motherboard players are seeing the chipsets designed by ASMedia having some issues over USB 3.1 reports Digitimes.
Because of the Zen chipsets' design limitations, USB 3.1 transmission speeds drop dramatically as circuit distance increases, forcing PC and motherboard players to add additional retimer and redriver chips or even an independent USB 3.1 IC in order for the function to work properly. This has thus increase the makers' costs.
Since PC sales have been weakening and the increased costs are likely to impact motherboard players' demand for the Zen chipsets, AMD is reportedly considering acquiring retimer and redriver chips via third-party suppliers to sell along with the Zen chipsets, but so far the sources have not yet heard any firm details on costs or development.
Commenting on the news, AMD said it is pleased that Zen is on track and will not comment on customer specific board-level solutions., while ASMedia clarified that this is purely a market rumor and its product's signal, stability and compatibility have all passed certification.
AMD Zen chipset designs have already been finalized and will begin shipments at the end of the third quarter and start mass production in the fourth.

I take CPU+MB+RAM as composite block delivering CPU performance and features.
$2~5 increase on this entire part is not that much even for entry level parts. But they should ensure that there is no need for more overrides like this. Because $20 on entry level system will be already noticeable and people may go for alternatives. And on top of that, there will be millions of boards made...
I hope they are not dumb and make all problems requiring extra overrides go away with next iteration/revision of chipset.

I would assume the Northbridge functions are on the CPU die now for Zen, but it looks like a sad state when AMD outsources the Southbridge to ASMedia.
I wonder where the problem is. ASMedia blaming AMD? ASMedia screwing up and blaming AMD? AMD screwing up?
$5 in parts = $10 to $20 MSRP increase.

God damn it I keep hearing bad things about Zen and its platform.
I hope to god they release something competitive. I would simply love to build a full AMD system again (CPU, MOBO, GPU).
Would be great if the Zen CPU's come out with a minimum of 8 cores 16 threads at around 3+GHz mark to allow for us overclockers to have some fun too
Hopefully they have created a scalable architecture too so we see the benefits of the new architecture across the board in terms of SKU's all the way from APU to high end servers.
