With the Ryzen launch pending, AMD initially is addressing the high-end and enthusiast gamers market. So what happens in the lower end and mainstream segment for the time being? Well, AMD will continue to sell their FX and A series products in the budget segment.

Opposed to completely replace the FX series at launch, they will simply position the FX products at more interesting prices, analysts report. It will be similar for the A series APUs that will be segmented into budget products. Unified AM4 socket compatibility helps maintain existing chips and provide a simply upgrade path to a Ryzen-based processor, an AMD spokesman said. AM4 socket for example supports the new chips but also the recent 7th Generation A-series chips.

The decision makes sense as AMD will still need to be able to fill the entire demand with a product stack  to match.

Ryzen obviously will have a massive impact en reduce the number of SKUs in the lower end segments. Over time, think 6 to 12 months all products in the entire range should be slowly phased out by Ryzen based products ranging from 4 to 8 core products. But the entry-level and mainstream markets are big, too big too ignore during the Ryzen launch window.

“You'll see the transition over the next nine to 12 months to move everything over," Analyst Jim McGregor said.
