AMD announces Threadripper 3960X (24c/48t ), 3970X (32c/64t) and TRX40 Chipset
AMD today announces the Ryzen Threadripper 3000 series processors in an official capacity. AMD starts off with two SKUs, the 3960X with 24 cores, and then the 3970X with 32-cores and an unspecified 3990X. Alongside the new processors, a new product series motherboards are announced, based on the TRX40 chipset.
In the initial launch wave, you'll thus see two main processor announcement with up-to 32-cores and 64-threads. We bulleted them up:
Threadripper 3960X & 3970X
These processors have 24c/48t and 32c/64t cores respectively. Both processors will have an up to 4.5 GHz turbo clock frequency and 3.8 GHz base clock for the 3960X and 3.7 GHz for the 3970X. The prices are 1399 USD and 1999 USD respectively. The prices are 1399 USD and 1999 USD brining the price oper core around the 60 USD marker.
Threadripper 3990X ?
AMD is keeping a bit of a mystery on this SKU and this paragraph is not an official one. But a Ryzen Threadripper 3990X processor could be imminent as well. The mac daddy of them could be holding 64-cores and 128-threads. This model is rumored to get planned for January 2020, and you know it, many roads lead to Rome.
TRX40 Chipset - The big interconnect
A new chipset has been born. TRX40 specifically for Threadripper 3000. It was imperative for AMD to get the most out of TR 3000 and thus they wanted to double up the PCIe Gen 4.0 interlink between the processor and motherboard chipset. This puppy has a PCIe 4.0 x8 interlink, which is unheard of (quadrupled) and creating massive possibilities for things like storage. What you are also going to notice is a further increase in PCIe Gen4 lanes, 72 lanes on Threadripper. Threadripper brings 64 PCIe Gen4 lanes to the table, 8 of those have been reserved for the chipset link and then the chipset link brings in another 24 PCIe Gen 4 links to the table with 8 reserved for that interconnect.
That's 88 lanes in total and thus 72 lanes available to the end-user. The socket has been named sTRX4. You are going to see a number of motherboards announcements today, the new Threadripper processors and platforms will become available by the 25th of November.

They are expensive indeed... but these things should completely rip to shreds anything before them in most workloads (except for gaming, which they are not targeted to)
Intel's highest end 18-core HEDT (old or new) has no chance in hell of competing with these things. The rest of their lineup is practically DOA.
And 3990X will be obscenely powerful... but looking at these prices, it will probably also cost $4999 or something like that.

Same here, now the choice is even harder, 18 core Intel for 1K or 24C TR3 for 1400
