AMD 2nd Generation Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX and 2920X Launch date

AMD sends word that they are announcing the availability date of two additional models of the 2nd Generation AMD Ryzen Threadripper family, the 2970WX and 2920X processors. These two models will be available for purchase worldwide on October 29th.

The Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX, with 24 cores and 48 threads, meets the demands of creators and innovators for the most intense workloads, while the Ryzen Threadripper 2920X delivers astounding processing power for enthusiasts and gamers with 12 cores and 24 threads.

Additionally, several software updates have been released that improve the experience and performance of the Threadripper WX processors including:

  • Game performance has been dramatically improved using Nvidia Graphics products on Ryzen Threadripper platforms.
  • The Far Cry 5 Update 9, released on August 9, addressed an application bug affecting many logical processor (high thread count) products, including Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX, to improve the game experience.
  • The October Windows 10 update (version 1809), just released on October 2. In addition to a number of feature innovations, the update brings improved stability with products leveraging 64 or more logical processors (high thread count processors), including Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX. You can visit the Microsoft website to download directly.

Another big update coming in October will be AMD’s introduction of the new AMD Dynamic Local Mode software for the Ryzen Threadripper WX Series processors, optimizing application performance by ensuring the most demanding threads always get preferential time on cores with local memory.

The Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX and 2990WX achieve breathtaking performance with 24 or 32 cores spread across four processor dies: two with direct access to local memory, and two with access to memory via the Infinity Fabric. There are instances where the entire application or specific workloads can achieve the best performance when they’re executed on the two CPU dies with local/direct memory access. This is where the new Dynamic Local Mode will come in with Threadripper 2970WX and 2990WX CPUs to automatically migrate the system’s most demanding application threads onto the cores with local memory access. In other words: the apps that prefer local DRAM access will automatically receive it, and apps that scale to many cores will be free to do so.

I figure the 2970WX will have proportionately better performance than the 2990WX, since the Infinity Fabric doesn't have to work as hard to feed all those extra cores.

these are the killer cpus...especially the 2920x @ $650 same price as the old six core Intel.

so many "content creators" will realize that they can have HEDT platform in reach... the fact that they can have a threadripper cpu and motherboard at the price of the 2950x and that they could spend the savings on lighting (lol)

this is what butt-hurts Intel, not commentary.
they have nothing to offer that isn't just ridiculous, over-heated, and antiquated.

The new dynamic local mode sounds interesting. Those who want to game with the WX chips won't need to reboot or disable cores for optimal performance, and I assume it will also help with productivity apps which require direct memory access. I wonder if this can be expanded further to eliminate game mode altogether? (make sure most/all threads for a game stay within a Zeppelin)
