3dfx to return after 20 years with a 'big announcement' ?

3dfx to return after 20 years with a 'big announcement' ?

3dfx Interactive, the former GPU maker, announced via its a Twitter account mentions that it will return to the market after 20-years, at least a big announcement is to be expected.

The manufacturer of the iconic Voodoo graphics cards was declared bankrupt in October 2002, Nvidia acquired nearly all patents and the Voodoo trademarks in 2000. It's unclear how the firm intends to return, although it's possible that it wants to create devices leveraging Arm's GPU methods.

It is conceivable that the Twitter account is not legitimate and is only a prank. Nonetheless, the tweet promises an announcement for next Thursday.

Unfortunately, the firm no longer has a website, so we can only relay this tweet. Disclaimers enough right?

Well, let's consider the two possibilities. If it's a troll, then that's that. If it's not, and someone got a hold of the 3dfx brand (didn't nvidia own it? Maybe it's something that can lapse when not used?) then I'd say the best we can expect here is some kind of reproduction of 3dfx retro hardware.

Terrible timing is scalper's profit is what they're after, so obviously what we'll see is simply the launch of another AIB brand. Big deal. The only vague suspense is whether they'll go red or green.

Unless of course they've spent the last 20 years developing, and now manufacturing, a completely new GPU architecture in absolute secrecy. So yeah, it's probably that.

I dont think they can enter anything. Nvidia owns them. It would be the same as Ati trying to get back without amd.
