Catalyst 5.6 drives just have been released by ATI. Over the upcoming 2-3 months we'll be seeing a lot of new updated from ATI (well one important update each month). This month ATI is focused on broadening compatibility and improving performance. That last one does not seem so fulfill the expectations though, here are some numbers from Anandtech (I'm not in the office right now, in fact I'm 5000 miles away from it).
Here's what they ended up with:
|Radeon X800 XL @ 1600x1200 noAA/AF|
|Doom 3||Half Life 2||Wolf: ET||Splinter Cell: CT|
They also ran these numbers with 4xAA and 8xAF enabled. They were even closer in performance than these numbers show. Needless to say that performance did not change.
The new drivers do off a couple of new features though.
