Specifications and features

“The VIPER STEEL RGB series evolved from the award-winning VIPER STEEL series memory and now comes equipped with spectacular RGB illumination and dedicated to bringing desktop DRAM RGB lighting design to a whole new level. The VIPER STEEL RGB series memory kits are currently available at speeds 3200MHz and 3600MHz with the largest capacity of 64GB (2x32GB) kit. All modules are hand-tested and optimized across the latest Intel and AMD Ryzen platforms to deliver excellent stability and a visual feast of RGB lighting to PC enthusiasts and water-cooled PC modders. Backed by a PATRIOT limited lifetime warranty, the VIPER STEEL RGB series is tailor-made for hardcore gamers, case modders, and overclockers and is now available at major US retailers.”

Features:

  •  Series: Viper Steel RGB
  •  Edition: Black headshield sides with golden Viper logo / Lightbar top
  •  Aluminum heat spreader with golden Viper logo design element
  •  RGB Sync up with ASUS/ASRock/MSI/Gigabyte motherboard app
  •  Feature Overclock: XMP 2.0 support for automatic overclocking
  •  Compatibility: Tested across the latest Intel/AMD platforms
  •  Limited lifetime warranty

That’s it with the marketing stuff here, so now we can proceed to the practical portion of this write-up. Let’s see what we have under the hood. First up is Thaiphoon Burner, which is a very good utility for checking the basic data on a RAM die. According to this program, the chips that are used here are from Hynix (and they’re probably CJR). Will they provide headroom for some overclocking? We’ll see on the following pages.

Thaiphoon burner wasn’t able to read all the data, and it actually showed 8 PCB layers rather than 10, but we think that this is just an error in recognition.

Manufacturer:

Patriot

Model:

PVSR432G360C0K

Frequency:

DDR4-3600

Basic timings:

20-26-26-46

Capacity:

32 GB (16 GB x2)

Voltage:

1.35 V

PCB Type:

10 layers

Form Factor:

288-pin DIMM

Warranty:

Limited Lifetime

The chips are covered with an RGB heatsink to ensure that the memory and PCB maintain a similar temperature, providing the best performance. If you’re not into overclocking and want to simply use the product, you just put the sticks in, enable XMP (which is, in fact, the industry standard and it’s hard to spot any RAM without this feature nowadays), reboot, and that’s it. Traditionally, we’ll kick off the review with some photo-shooting first, and then move on to the practical part (benchmark/games).

Patriot Viper Steel RGB 3600 MHz (2x 16GB) review
Today, we are looking at Patriot Viper Steel RGB 3600 MHz CL20 (yes – 20!) memory in a 32 GB set consisting of two 16 GB modules. I can say that we’ve had our fair share of experience with Patriot RAM. We had an opportunity to test a similarly clocked kit (3600 MHz) from the Viper Steel series (so no RGB there), but the capacity was 2 x 32 GB back then, and the latencies were quite surprisingly better, at 18-22-22-42. Before that, we also reviewed one of the fastest 2 x 8 GB kits in the range, clocked at 4000 MHz with CL19 latency.

Patriot Viper Steel DDR4 3600 MHz (64GB) review
Today, we are looking at Patriot Viper Steel 3600 MHz CL18 memory in a 64 GB set consisting of two 32 GB modules. At the beginning of 2019, we had an opportunity to check a higher-clocked kit from that series (4000 MHz), but the capacity was 2 x 8 GB. Patriot’s Viper Steel Series is offered at speeds ranging from 3000 MHz up to 4400 MHz, with XMP 2.0 support.
