Matrox TripleHead 2 Go Digital Edition (DVI) review -
6 - Surround Gaming
The graphics card is very important though. The total pixel count, and in this case, gaming at 3840x1024 will be smooth as long as gaming at 2560x1600 is smooth. So bare in mind you do need a fast VGA card to be able to render (3840x1024) 3.9 Mpixels you have available.
See, compare it like this:
16x12= 1.9 Mpixels
19x12= 2.3 Mpixels
38x10= 3.9 Mpixels
25x16= 4.0 Mpixels
With the TH2Go you render roughly the same amount of data as on a 30" 2560x1600 LCD screen.
With the new flash update we finally able to boot into Windows Vista, by adjusting the display properties we can immediately switch towards 3840x1024 and expand our desktop screen. Let's try some games.
S.t.a.l.k.e.r. - it works straight out of the box, in-game just set 3840x1024 and you are good to go. Though the menu was completely stretched out, it just looks incredible in gaming mode. And for the sake of it, let's just imagine that the small monitor has an equal size compared to the others okay ? The look and feel is just amazing, there's just so much to look at, you turn your head here and there and your brain has a lot of new info to cope with.
Gaming with so much surrounding information is a completely difference experience opposed to what you are used to.
Medal of honor, Allied Assault. What a game. here the introduction started, look at that .. amazing.
Though though it did span three screens, the FOV didnt appear to be set correctly which meant that everything looked stretched. This is an error on our account though as we still needed to tweak some settings. But even here, that is just amazing. I just couldn't stop playing the darn game.
Frontlines was another game just like that. So the in-game view looked a bit squashed down. The fact that we are using wide screen monitors did not help either of course. Bare in mind, most games work beautifully and have no aspect ratio issues especially if you have your monitors right. Best of all, if a game is not 100% supported with a bit of twiddling around in the config files, typically you can easily fix this. So, the games that you want to play in surround must support widescreen or flexible aspect ratios to work with TH2G and preferably three 4:3 panels. Once properly setup, gaming is incredible immersive this way.
Exactly two years ago we reviewed the analog (VGA) Matrox Triplehead to go. And although a little rough around the edges when it came to graphics card support, times have changed for the better. In fact last year they released a digital (DVI interface) version of the product and we figured it was about time to check out how this small box of magic has developed, and we where pleasantly surprised I might add.

The Triplehead2go basically is a small breakout box that takes the analog signal from your graphics cards towards the little box, which on it's end redistributes three analog monitor signals towards your three screens. The cool factor is intense .. I just played Age of Empires III for example in a resolution of 3840x1024.
