Core i7 3820 processor review - Performance - DDR3 Memory read | write

Memory Read test

So for memory we had some good stuff to work with, Intel has a couple of certified partners for memory to get some sweet XMP profiles going. One of them is G.Skill with their newly revised RipjawsZ series memory, their 3rd reincarnation of their DDR3 memory modules.

Intel Core i7-3960X and MSI X79A GD65

We received a nice 4x4GB kit for quad channel setup, and when you OC or want a more easy way, flick on the XMP profile in the BIOS you'll get this:

Intel Core i7-3960X and MSI X79A GD65

Yeppers, 2133 MHz CAS9 stable right out of the box. All we did was enable the XMP profile in the BIOS.

Core i7 3820

Obviously we also had to peek at memory bandwidth performance. Now with the regular AIDA memory tests we see good performance, but it certainly did not double up, despite being in quad channel mode. Still the GSKILL RipjawsZ sticks at 2133 MHz managing to push nearly 21000 MB/sec which is fantastic. Once you start to overclock the performance rises nearly exponentially BTW.

Memory Write test

Core i7 3820

We did the same with the memory write tests. Again a bit average default results here. It totally changes once we measure with SiSoft Sandra though:

Sandra Memory Index

Core i7 3820

Here we make use of the Sandra Memory performance test, it gives us an index score of overall memory performance, and yeah .. there's no hiding from that. These are near silly numbers to observe as with 2133 MHz in quad channel we close in at 50 GB/sec, that's 50.000 MB/sec of bandwith.
