AMD A4-Series Llano Desktop Chips get pricetag

Processor 721 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

The entire Lynx/Llano release from AMD has been a decent success. Starting at the top with the A8 series processors (oh wait APUs), obviously the A6 series and now it's time that A4 series see the light of day as well.

The chips are the A4-3300 and A4-3400, being part of the same Llano platform, though with just two CPU cores each. They also have the Radeon HD 6410D graphics, which utilizes 160 shader units and runs at 600 MHz.

Speaking of clock speeds, the CPU cores themselves are set at 2.5 GHz for the A4-3300 and 2.7 GHz for the A4-3400. Furthermore, the DDR3 memory controller supports memory at 1,600 MHz, while the 1 MB of L2 cache completes the feature set of the units, more or less.

The A-Series APUs on sale have prices of $89 or more, with the A8-3850 costing the most ($135). The A4-3300 can be pre-ordered for visibly less, $73.52 to be exact (boxed), or $78.78 (tray), while the A4-3400 goes for $79.25 and $84.92, respectively.

Then again, these are early prices, and it is fairly safe to assume that official availability will bring with it a drop in the price tags, until the units ship for $65-$70.

POV sticks 4GB of VRAM on GTX 550

Graphics Cards 1673 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Um, yeah any valid point for that kind of framebuffer .. beats me too. According to ComputerBase, POV introduced a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti 4 full gigabytes of memory (DDR3), so we have not confirmed this with POV themselves just yet.

The clock frequency of the memory is 1.066 MHz, while the GPU (comparatively unassuming to the one above) has a clock of 900 MHz.

Meanwhile, 192 CUDA cores add to the overall feature set (they operate at 1,900 MHz), as does the 128-bit memory interface. All in all, this is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti video controller whose memory amount is four to eight times the one of regular cards.

Users will have to pay 113 Euro (only pre-orders can be placed for the moment), a price that accounts for the DVI, D-Sub and HDMI outputs and all the technologies NVIDIA is known for (PhysX, CUDA, etc.).

BitFenix Outlaw Mid-Tower Gaming Case

HTPC 228 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

BitFenix is pleased to launch its latest gaming chassis. Named Outlaw, this mid-tower ATX enclosure offers premium features, innovative layout, and superior styling at a groundbreaking price point.

"We set out to design a value gaming chassis like no other on the market, and the result of that is Outlaw," says BitFenix Product Manager David Jarlestedt. "Offering features normally found on chassis twice the price, Outlaw is a gaming case that really does break all the rules."

One look at Outlaw reveals something truly unique in this segment. The motherboard tray is flipped upside down, placing the graphics card close to the top of the case. By doing so, Outlaw not only delivers enhanced cooling to graphics cards via the top fan vents, but also allows the installation of extra-long VGA cards so gamers can outfit their system with the latest firepower available.

While priced very affordably, Outlaw comes with many of the same features that are found on more expensive enclosures. On the exterior, gamers can look forward to a handsomely crafted front bezel that's coated with signature BitFenix SofTouch Surface Treatment for stain resistance and a luxuriously soft feel. Four high-speed USB 2.0 ports offer excellent connectivity, while the black coated interior and black cabling lend Outlaw an even more premium look and feel. With Outlaw, users can experience the quality and attention to detail that has garnered BitFenix nearly 200 awards worldwide.

But looking good is one thing; performing well is another. Outlaw is definitely no slouch in the cooling department. Aside from the stock 120mm fan, gamers can install up to 7 additional 120mm fans for a total of eight, and the two fan locations on the side panel can also be upgraded to 140mm fans for added airflow. For water cooling enthusiasts, two water cooling holes also come standard.

Outlaw is also designed to give users maximum expansion possibilities. With four 5.25" and four 3.5" drive bays, users have plenty of room to expand their system, and with the included 2.5" SSD mount, users can equip their Outlaw with the latest in SSD technology. Along with the seven included PCI slots, gamers have all the room they need to make their Outlaw a force to be reckoned with.

When it comes time to put their system together, users will definitely appreciate the DIY-friendly features that are included with Outlaw. A large CPU cutout makes short work of swapping CPU coolers, and thoughtful cable management features make it easy to keep your system tangle-free. All drives can be secured using easy-to-use thumbscrews for added stability and tool-free installation.

BitFenix Outlaw will be available on store shelves beginning September 2011 with an estimated MSRP of 39

Acer: Tablet fever already cooling down

Generic News 1994 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Acer chairman JT Wang claims tablet fever is already starting to cool down and that consumers are being attracted by notebooks again, especially with the upcoming launch of ultrabooks and Windows 8.

Acer is already set to launch an Ultrabook in September with a price as low as US$799, noted Wang adding that Acer has performed surveys and discovered that consumers have a high interest in Ultrabooks.

Some players in the PC industry agree with Wang's prediction and pointed out that tablet PCs are mainly marketed for entertainment purposes, different from notebooks, which are also tools for work and learning. Therefore, once the tablet PC market reaches saturation, consumers' motivation to replace tablet PCs will be a lot lower than for notebooks, causing tablet PC sales to stagnate once volumes reach a certain level.

In addition to Acer and Asustek Computer, which plan to launch Ultrabooks in September, Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo and Hewlett-Packard (HP) are all set to launch models in the fourth quarter of 2011 or the first quarter of 2012. Taiwan-based makers of components such as batteries, hinges and chassis have also started small volume pilot production, and are set to start mass shipments in the fourth quarter.

Acer president Jim Wong pointed out that although Ultrabooks will only account for a small portion of notebook shipments in 2011, the percentage is expected to reach 25-35% in 2012, a number close to Intel's prediction of 40% by the end of 2012.

As for Windows 8, Wang believes that the operating system will contribute a stronger sales boost to notebooks than tablet PCs and will also benefit brand vendors during the back-to-school season in 2012 as the operating system's launch date will be close to that period.

NVIDIA 28nm mobile lineup surfaces

Laptop 99 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Guru3D.com ImageNVIDIA's upcoming 28nm mobile GPU lineup for the mobile platform surfaced, which may start hitting the market by the end of the year. The low-end parts will arrive first, while higher-end parts will follow in January and April/May.

Codenamed N13 Series, the chips are ten in number and are divided into three categories, according to the target consumer segment.

The N13E are the Enthusiast-grade models and will arrive next year, in January (N13E-GS1) and April or May (N13E-GTX), though the samples will ship earlier (early November and early 2012, respectively). They have 2 GB of GDDR5 VRAM backing them and 256-bit memory interfaces. The mainstream and low-end GPUs will arrive earlier, during this year's December in fact (2011), with the mobile parts set to appear fastest. This means that their first samples will be sent out during early October.

Their memory will be of 1 GB or 2 GB DDR3/GDDR5 and the bandwidth will be of 64 bits or 128 bits, depending on model.

All in all, the codenames are similar, in pattern, to the N12 that spawned the 500 series of adapters, though changes may still happen by the time anything is made official.

The info and specs should be taken with a grain of salt as it's nothing more then a spreadsheet filled out by someone.
