Gigabyte Radeon HD 6870 gets tested

Gigabyte submitted their Radeon HD 6870, and as much as Gigabyte would have liked to customize it, AMD is not yet allowing custom model of this unit. So the product they shipped is except for the sticker, very much similar to the reference Radeon HD 6870.

That doesn't mean we don't want to check it out of course ... the R6870 is an impressive piece of hardware for the money you need to put down on the table.

AMD GPU marketshare declining again

Processor 721 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

The latest GPU marketshare report from Jon Peddie Research indicates Intel and NVIDIA gained marketshare in Q3 2010 at the expense of AMD. Compared to the quarter before, Intel gained 2.2 percent to 55.6 percent and NVIDIA's marketshare rose 0.5 percent to 21.2 percent, while AMD's marketshare declined 2.7 percent to 22.3 percent.

The report also mentions that GPU sales were down 1 percent sequentially due to reduced notebook sales, which could be blamed on Apple's iPad, as the company sold 8 million of them. However, compared to the same period the year before, Q3 2010 GPU shipments are up 10 percent.

JPR says AMD has attributed its market share decline to "weakened demand and OEMs letting their GPU inventory run down to avoid being stuck with leftover processors." Some of AMD's customers switched to Nvidia products "due to real and perceived shortages in supply," the research firm adds.

Vendor Q3 2009 Q2 2010 Q3 2010
AMD 20.1% 25.0% 22.3%
Intel 53.6% 53.4% 55.6%
Nvidia 25.3% 20.7% 21.2%

And then a Marcury reports the following, we received the following from AMD:

Mercury Research has made Q3 2010 graphics market share information available, and for the second consecutive quarter AMD is the market share leader in discrete graphics.  In addition, we made further inroads in notebook discrete, capturing an additional 5.6 share points and surpassing 60% share in notebook discrete.  This is a tremendous undertaking and demonstrates the strength of the DirectX 11 notebook discrete graphics product stack, enabling AMD to outpace our competitor yet again in this key market

Zotac GeForce GTX 460 dual GPU

Graphics Cards 1673 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

It seems that Zotac is working on a dual-GPU version of the GeForce GTX 460.

Now history has proven that these photo's accidentally leak out, create some hype and then you never hear from the actual product again (very cheap advertising). Still we'll see ...  the card has two GeForce GTX 460 1 GB GPUs in SLI configuration, much like every other dual-GPU NVIDIA card.

The card uses an NVIDIA nForce 200 chip to transfer data between the two GPUs, a dual 3+1+1 phase VRM that draws power from two 8-pin PCI-E power connectors, and display connectivity is relayed to the rear-panel from both the GPUs, that's four dual-link DVI, and one mini-HDMI.

This way you could also manage 3D Vision in Stereo, although admittedly with this setup, that solution would be massively underpowered. Here's some photo's, courtesy of the owner.

NEC SpectraView 231 Professional Display

Generic News 1994 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

for colour-critical applications into the market. The hardware-calibratable display, just like the SpectraView Reference models 241 and 271, features a 14-bit LUT for exceptional colour control and a 3D LUT for precise colour space reproduction. Digital Uniformity Control (ColorComp) and Backlight Ageing Correction also give users stable performance values over the display's entire lifetime.

The model is targeted for colour-critical users in the fields of digital photo-editing and video-processing, colour workflow, pre-press or DTP. Equipped with a high-end IPS panel, the NEC SpectraView 231 covers 75% of the Adobe RGB colour space and offers a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. In practical terms, this means excellent picture quality with high viewing angle stability. The Digital Uniformity Control (ColorComp) feature automatically controls the colour distribution to create a balanced and homogeneous picture, which is of particular importance for professional colour applications.

Intelligent features such as the picture-in-picture function, which allows multiple program windows to be displayed simultaneously, facilitate increased productivity and permit complex workflows to be easily realised.

The display's connectivity options also provide first-class flexibility. The NEC SpectraView 231 comes equipped with the future-proof DisplayPort connector, two DVI-D interfaces and finally a VGA analogue input. The integrated, programmable USB hub also supports the connection of multiple PC platforms, so that a single mouse and keyboard can control two computers.

With height adjustability of up to 150 mm and the pivot function for positioning the display in landscape or portrait mode, personalised comfort at the workstation is guaranteed. The NEC SpectraView 231 has been awarded the TCO 5.0 certificate in recognition of its ergonomic features and responsible approach to minimising environmental impact.

"The new NEC SpectraView 231 offers an excellent price/performance ratio," says Christopher Parker, Product Line Manager for Professional Displays at NEC Display Solutions. "With this product, we're offering professional users a high-end colour-critical display at an unbeatable low price."

Seagate bets on hybrid drives

Storage 785 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Seagate CEO Steven Luczo claims hybrid hard disks are the future:

Seagate, one of the world's largest maker of hard disk drives, said that solid-state drives (SSDs) will be survived by hybrid drives that feature both flash memory and traditional magnetic media. Moreover, according to Seagate, only a fraction of expensive computers feature SSDs.

"I would say though that from what we know of the offering for example Apple, the percentage of their units that they sell with SSDs versus HDDs is a tiny fraction. I think it

Windows 8 will hit retail in two years already ?

Generic News 1994 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

A Dutch representative for Microsoft posted on the company's blog that Microsoft is currently working on the next version of Windows and that it will be released to the market in two years. When questioned about the statement, a Microsoft representative refused to comment. Here's what the website of Microsoft Netherlands says (machine translated by Google Translate):

Furthermore, Microsoft is of course the next version of Windows. But it will take about two years before 'Windows 8' on the market.

What could we see in Windows 8? Microsoft insiders have hinted that we could see some sort of Kinect support in the operating system. Yes, using motion control to control your desktop OS. Crazy? Maybe, but just keep in mind that it's named 'Microsoft Kinect', not 'Xbox Kinect' and that Microsoft spent a metric fortune developing the tech behind Kinect. Way too much, in fact, to restrict it's use to video games.
