Cheaper PowerColor 5850 and 5830 spotted

Graphics Cards 1673 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

The colleagues over at techpowerup noticed that PowerColor quietly added new somewhat more cost-effective Radeon HD 5850 and Radeon HD 5830 graphics cards to its lineup:

"The two are based on a new common PCB design that's shorter (10.4"), and uses a cost-effective component layout. The cooler also keeps up, it is more compact, and has a simpler heat pipe-based design. Both cards stick to the AMD reference clock speeds: 725/1000 MHz (core/memory) for the HD 5850, and 800/1000 MHz (core/memory) for the HD 5830. As far as connectivity goes, the HD 5830 V2 lacks one DVI. "

The products could end up a tidbit cheaper opposed to the current lineup, and that's always good.

Sony Halts Sales of PS3 Jailbreak

console 102 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

In an attempt to prevent and act against the PS Jailbreak Sony has made steps to make sure that it doesn't get out of hand. It's not a new firmware update, though. For now, they're targetting the modchips that make the hack possible. As of yesterday, they've managed to secure a temporary injuction from Australia's Federal Court, blocking the sale and importation of the new PS3 modchips.

The injunction means that until August 31, none of the modchip's Australian distributors will be able to import, sell or otherwise offload the devices. What's more, they have to take all the stock they already have and leave them with Sony's solicitors until the August 31 deadline passes.

Sony has from now until August 31 to convince the courts that the injunction becomes a more permanent arrangement (temporary injunctions are designed to maintain the "status quo" until a matter can be settled). If they succeed, it'll mean the end of legal sales of the device in Australia, but if they fail, then once September 1 rolls around the chips will be able to go on sale.

GeForce GTS 450 on September 13 and specs

Graphics Cards 1673 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Guru3D.com ImageMultiple rumors indicate thab the launch of GeForce GTS 450 is pending, and real soon as well.

From what we've heard in the channel September 13th (on a Monday) this new mid-range product will be released. Though unconfirmed the GF106 GPU empowering this product will have 192 shader processors and as such will be competing with the ATI Radeon HD 5700 series, the Radeon HD 5770 in specific.

Reported clock frequencies seem to be nicely high at 783 MHz on the core, 1577 MHz on the shader processors and 1804 (3600 effective) MHz on the memory, the 1GB DDR5 will run a 128-bit memory bus with a bandwidth of 57.8 MB/s,

If you guys think along with me a little, the original GTX 260 had 192 shader processors but nearly half more bandwidth. It seems though that the high clocks on the GTX 450 will compensate for a lot of performance, indicating roughly GTX 260 performance, yet now with DX11 compatibility, more memory and a FAR better price tag.

The latest rumors (and these really are rumors) suggest that the entry level the GTS 450 cards will retail at only $129, though we find that to be on the very low side. Exciting stuff though.

OCZ halts value Memory module line

Memory 234 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

It has been quiet surrounding OCZ memory for the past year alright and initial hints now confirm that OCZ will be retreating from the value memory module market. Read carefully, value. See, OCZ's biggest market are now SSD drives, it took them over by surprize as 50% of their sales now is in some way SSD related.

XBitlabs reports that OCZ Technology Group, of the leading suppliers of premium memory modules, said Wednesday that it would drop its memory business partly so that to concentrate on SSD products that now target various market segments, including high-margin enterprise-oriented solutions. The company, however, will continue to sell advanced memory modules for enthusiasts.

"The Value DRAM segments basically were not providing any profit to the company. Given our SSD growth trajectory - SSDs are more than 50% of our business on a go forward basis - and that fact that we dominate all segments of the SSD market in terms of performance, it just did not make sense to keep selling Value memory at 3% margins," said Ryan Petersen, chief executive officer of OCZ Technology.

OCZ has four major dynamic random access memory (DRAM) product lines: Enthusiasts, Gamers, Special Edition and Value. The latter product line accounted for over two thirds of OCZ's sales in 2009. As a result, with 50% of revenue already commanded by SSDs, it makes more sense for the manufacturer to assign more resources onto further development of solid-state drives as well as advanced memory modules.

"We have not specified exactly which exact lines are going away, but the emphasis will be on not just maintaining, but growing the high-end memory offering. This is the area we are traditionally strong in and customers can expect to see new premium memory products launching as we scale back our lower end lines. The distinct lines of what will be cut is an ongoing process as we optimize the product offering moving forward," said Alex Mei, chief marketing officer of OCZ.

Afterburner 2.0.0 Beta 7 is out, in this beta Unwinder add a data filtering option to reject misreading spike caused by resource conflict when using another utility at the same time with Afterburner. But we still recommend you use Afterburner alone, and close Afterburner before run other monitor utility.
