PowerColor working on new design 4890

Graphics Cards 1673 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Recently we reviewed PowerColor's PCS+ 4890, which was a little noisy. But PowerColor is now working on yet another Radeon HD 4890.

The new custom-designed Radeon HD 4890 graphics cards should free itself from the good old fashion reference design completely. This new SKU is tagged under label name AX4890-1GBD5 seems to concentrate on a more simple and value targeted design.

What seems to be  weird is while they overhaul the design, they keep all specifications reference, thus an 850 MHz core clock frequency, and 975 MHz for the memory (1 GB of GDDR5). This product will likely end up as PowerColor's HD 4890 PCS+, PCS++ series, apart from the common reference design. It is expected to be positioned around the US $200 mark.

A-Data launches super fast DDR3 memory

Memory 234 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

A-DATA today announces its new XPG Plus Series DDR3-2200+ v2.0 dual channel kit, which is the highest speed of DDR3 DRAM module in the industry.

The XPG Plus Series DDR3-2200+ v2.0 DRAM module is designed and guaranteed to run on future dual-channel platforms at incredible 2,200MHz killer speed with tight CL8-8-8-24 timings at a voltage of 1.65V, and are available in 1GBx2 and 2GBx2 dual-channel kits.

Through the latest Thermal Conductive Technology (TCT), the XPG Plus Series DDR3-2200 v2.0 DRAM module is built with the superior cooling design, which able to provide greater cooling environment for both DRAM IC and PCB (printed circuit board), to improve the performance and greater stability. Moreover, the doubling amount of copper in the PCB delivers low temperature and also improves the power efficiency for the XPG Plus Series DDR3-2200 v2.0 DRAM module.

Features:

  • All DRAM IC are verified by overclocking criteria.
  • High-quality 2oz copper 8 layers PCB (Printed Circuit Board)
  • Optimized for 64-bit OS (operating system)*
  • Backward compatible with DDR3-1866, 1600, 1333 and 1066
  • Lifetime limited warranty

* 32-bit OS environment has 4GB memory addressing barrier which results in 2.5~3GB memory accessibility.

Specification:

  • 2GB/4GB dual channel module kits are tested at 2200MHz
  • Test at latency setting 8-8-8-24 at 1.55V-1.65V
  • SPD (Serial Presence Detect) programmed at JEDEC standard DDR3-1333 with latency settings at 9-9-9-24 for basic system booting

NVIDIA launches geForce GTS 240 for OEM

Graphics Cards 1673 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Well, what do you know. After denying it's existence NVIDIA relased the GeForce GTS 240, a new graphics card intended for OEMs only. This part features 112 stream processors, 256-bit memory bus, 675MHz core, 1620MHz shaders and 1GB GDDR3 memory clocked at 1100MHz.

The GeForce GTS 240 has a TDP of 120W and is cooled by a single-slot cooler that spans only about three fourths of the card.

And yes, of course this is a rebranded 2007 / 2008 model GeForce 8800 and then 9800 GT and thus now GTS 240.

GPU market showing recovery, AMD gaining marketshare

Graphics Cards 1673 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Jon Peddie Research released a report about the graphics shipment in the second quarter of 2009. The research company found that after several bad quarters, the GPU market is recovering. Last quarter a total of 98.30 million graphics chips were shipped, up 31.29 percent from 74.87 million the quarter before and also up 4.1 percent from 94.42 million in Q2 2008.

Most vendors had a good quarter but JPR notes it will take until 2010 before the market is again at 2008 levels.
After the channel stopped ordering GPUs and depleted inventory in anticipation of a long drawn out worldwide recession in Q3 and Q4 of 2008, expectations were hopeful, if not high that Q1

Western Digital releases 1TB laptop hard drive

Storage 785 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Western Digital announced Monday two laptop drives that offer "extreme" amounts of storage: the Scorpio Blue 1TB and the Scorpio Blue 750GB. Prior to this announcement, the largest laptop hard drive available was 500GB.

Currently, the largest desktop hard drive on the market is 2TB. The Scorpio Blue 1TB drive, though half the capacity, is still very impressive, considering the fact that a 2.5-inch laptop drive is much smaller than a 3.5-inch desktop drive. The new WD laptop drives are the first that use 333GB per platter technology. The Scorpio Blue hard drives support the SATA2 (3Gbps) standard but have a thickness of 12.5 millimeters, as opposed to 9.5 millimeters in other 2.5-inch drives.

This also means the new drives would not fit in all 2.5-inch slots in laptops.

MSI Radeon 4890 Cyclone SOC (1GHz edition) review

Review 567 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Today we will test and review the all new MSI Radeon HD 4890 Cyclone SOC edition (Super OverClocked), and oh-my-gosh ... for the money this thing is going to be fairly spectacular. As it runs on a 1000 MHz core clock frequency. Several improvements have been made to the board design. You'll of course notice the huge phat heatpipe based cooler, this cooler is called the Cyclone.

The design incorporates no less than four heatpipes with a thermally controlled (PWM) 10CM fan. Two of the heatpipes are actually 8mm thick (!).

Microsoft Store layout designs, concepts leaked

Generic News 1994 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Layout designs of Microsoft's upcoming retail stores have been leaked in a PowerPoint Presentation. The presentation was drafted by Lippicott, a "design and brand strategy" consultant firm reportedly hired by Microsoft to help further the concept and design of the stores. The leak indicates Microsoft will be borrowing elements from other retailers such as the Apple Store and Sony Style. The stores will center around Microsoft's upcoming Windows 7, Xbox, PCTV, and Windows Mobile.
Frank Shaw and Waggener Edstrom, Microsoft employees, commented on the leaked presentation stating, "As a part of our process in briefing creative agencies, we shared some early prototypes and concepts of our retail store plans. No final decisions have been made."

Microsoft plans to target a customer demographic they call "Emily," who is described by Gizmodo as "a younger version of your mom."

The prototype designs indicate there will be a Digital Media Wall that wraps around the store, used to display video and images. The designs indicate the stores will provide a rival to Apple's Genius Bar with its own "Answers Bar" or "Guru Bar." The stores will additionally host large demos and events regarding Project Natal and the reported project Pink. The stores will also host birthday parties. Check out the thumbs.
