GlacialTech rolled out the UFO V51 Silent and UFO 51 PWM processor coolers, these new models support all the latest processors from Intel and AMD, including the new Core i7. The UFO V51 is pretty big, it has four heatpipes with 6mm and 8mm diameter, a highly polished copper bottom and two 92mm fans.

The cooler measures 130 x 157 x 138mm (L x W x H) and weighs 780g.

Long Zheng reports that Windows 7 is supporting Direct3D 10 in software. For example, Crysis may be a Direct3D 10 game, but if you only have a Direct3D 9-level graphics card, it might only make your jaws open instead of hitting the floor. But that's all going to change comes Windows 7.

Simply put, in Windows 7, you will experience the same graphics fidelity and detail whether you have a Direct3D 9-level graphics card or even no graphics card. The magic fairy dust which makes this possible is called Direct3D 10Level9 and Direct3D WARP10 respectively. Direct3D 10Level9 is exactly what the name describes, it allows you to run Direct3D 10 applications on Direct3D 9 hardware with the same visual output but at the cost of performance penalties compared to running on native Direct3D 10 hardware. On the other hand, if your graphics functionality or partially or wholly non-existent either by design or due to anomalies (graphics driver), that's where WARP10 comes into play.

WARP which stands for Windows Advanced Rasterization Platform is a complete implementation of Direct3D 10 in software form - that is using only the CPU. It's even capable of anti-aliasing up to 8xMSAA and anisotropic filtering. What's amazing is that it is parity with the output of a native Direct3D 10 device. The MSDN article describes 'the majority of the images appear almost identical between hardware and WARP10, where small differences sometimes occur we find they are within the tolerances defined by the Direct3D 10 specification.'

During its first-half fiscal 2008-09 conference call today, Ubisoft parried a question regarding the Assassin's Creed sequel.

 While an Ubisoft executive would not confirm the game's release for fiscal 2010 (more specifically, holiday 2009), le exec did concede that "we are working hard on the product" -- the first real confirmation of its assumed development. Well, we knew it was coming thanks to some wacked out text and a very open ending in the first game, but it's nice to see the confirmation... now hopefully they remove much of the repetitive nature.

Gigabyte today launched a new GeForce 9800 GTX+ graphics card. Now that by itself is not so special, but what does make it special is that it comes with 1 GB of memory .. and custom Zalman cooling. And that's a pretty nice combination for sure. 

Looks like the card is clocked at 740/1800 and is available for $218.30 -- NewEgg even ahs a 30 USD rebate.

HP recently used an event in Taiwan to unveil its first-ever nettop PC, the mini-Q 2030, that is powered by Intel's 1.6GHz dual-core Atom 330 processor and 2GB of DDR2 RAM. Other hardware includes a 160GB 7,200rpm SATA hard-drive with Windows Vista preloaded and a dual-layer DVD burner. It also has four USB 2.0 ports, two PS/2 ports, an Ethernet port, a VGA jack for connecting to monitors and an audio and microphone jack.

The mini-Q weighs in a maximum of just 4.4lbs and does not include a monitor or any peripherals. Along with the mini-Q 2030, HP also showed the mini-Q 2020 which sports the single-core Atom 230 rated at the same 1.6GHz, half the RAM at 1GB and the older Windows XP OS.

The HP mini-Q 2030 will be available in Taiwan for the equivalent of around $386 while the HP mini-Q 2020, will cost about $296. There is no official information on if or when the nettops will be available in North America.

FurMark, the popular graphics card stability test and OpenGL graphics benchmark, is available in version 1.5.0. This new version fixes a bug that occurs with ForceWare 180 series. Hynix has announced the first GDDR5 memory chips that can transfer up to 7Gbps (7000MHz), which is almost twice as fast as the memory found on ATI's Radeon HD 4870 cards. Hynix says volume production of the new 7Gbps GDDR5 memory chips is slated for the first half of next year.
The newly-introduced 1Gb GDDR5 is built on Hynix' 54nm process technology.

It operates at the fastest speed of 7Gbps, which is 40% improved compared to 5Gbps GDDR5 and processes up to 28GB of data per second with a 32-bit I/O. The new Hynix graphics memory is also designed to minimize power consumption at 1.35V power supply. The JEDEC-standard 1Gb GDDR5 graphics DRAM at 7Gbps targets high-end applications such as game PCs, game consoles and graphics cards.

Microsoft is in the later stages of developing a phone of its own that will rely on performance to drive sales, a rumor floated by the Inquirer today claims. The Windows Mobile developer is allegedly developing a phone that would use one of NVIDIA's Tegra processors as its heart. The feature would likely involve the APX 2500 chip and theoretically give the Microsoft device 720p video playback and advanced 3D visuals that are absent on other phones.

This deal may explain the lack of support for Tegra outside of Windows Mobile devices, the site suggests. The phone would reportedly be introduced at this year's Mobile World Congress (3GSM) in February and released not long afterwards, though Microsoft has historically unveiled new versions of Windows Mobile at the expo but shipped them only in summer or fall.

Most observers believe any Microsoft move into making its own phones is likely prompted by the iPhone, which is already threatening to undermine Windows Mobile market share and has been deemed successful in part due to its control over both the hardware and software. Microsoft has always downplayed the possibility of producing its own phone but has repeatedly mentioned porting Zune elements to Windows Mobile and recently bought out Danger, giving it experience with both hardware and mobile software design from the Sidekick.

The Redmond, Washington-based company has often touted the choice of devices and hardware independence of Windows Mobile but also has a history of effectively overwhelming its hardware partners when deemed necessary. The company had initially promoted Portable Media Center and the PlaysForSure program for music but, with the Zune, effectively ended both of these as firms either switched to their own mobile operating systems and switched to more universal standards like MP3 for their music.

Micron on Monday said to CNET that it would start mass-producing its long-promised RealSSD C200 256GB solid-state drive in March of next year. The timeframe pushes back the drive from its original fall launch and limits the current lineup to the 128GB drives common in the industry. The 2.5-inch SSD has been touted as a potential leader through its combination both of the large amount of space as well as its extremely high read speed, which matches Intel's at 250MB per second.

The setback gives Samsung a few months of lead time for its 256GB FlashSSD, which is slightly slower in reads at 220MB per second but has a much faster 200MB per second for writing data. Micron's drive writes at 100MB per second.

Micron's SSD partner Intel notes, however, that the large capacity won't require its just-unveiled 34nm memory technology while maintaining a relatively low price. The new process, which allows the two companies to put more memory in the same physical space, should deliver over 300GB of storage even in the 1.8-inch drives used by ultraportable notebooks.

The Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at The University of Texas at Austin has deployed "Stallion" - the world's highest resolution tiled display. Stallion features a total of 75 Dell 30" LCD displays, arranged in 15 columns of five displays each. These 30" Dell displays have a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels, good for a combined total of 307 million pixels. With more than 36 gigabytes of graphics memory, 108 gigabytes of system memory, and 100 processing cores, Stallion enables datasets to be processed on a massive scale.
