In an attempt to further explore the possibilities of Lucid's HYDRA MSI is going to release AMD 870 based motherboards with this extra chip. If you have no idea about what HYDRA is and does, please read our Fuzion motherboard review.
Due to the large amount of driver issues we are surprised to see MSI push through with this technology. At CEBIT MSI is showing a 870A-GD60 Hydra motherboard which apparently will not be much more expensive than the regular 870 motherboard.
The AM3 socket is powered by a 10-phase DrMOS based VRM. The CPU connects to four DDR3 DIMM slots for dual-channel memory. It connects to the AMD 870 northbridge over the HyperTransport 3.0 interface. Its lone PCI-E 2.0 x16 port is taken up by the Hydra Engine chip located between the two PCI-E 2.0 x16 slots.
