As we'll always clearly state, our testing method is trivial at best and can be considered non-representative. To test modern age power supplies you need real expensive load equipment and monitoring devices easily worth thousands and thousands of dollars. We do not have it at hand and therefore test the real-world way. We chuck the PC full with hardware and stress it. During stress we monitor the several voltage rails and look for fluctuations. Now, in the past we have seen some PSUs show a little bit of an offset here and there, this however was not the case with the Enermax Modu82+ II we just tested.
The 625 Watts is something we can pretty easily throw at a PSU, well we went way more than that. Even 700W was not an issue. At that load level we did not spot any weird voltage fluctuations or instability. At best, when highly stressed the PSU got a little lukewarm, but that was the only physical oddity we could observe as even the fan noise level remained acceptable at all times.
Efficiency then. During our test session we compared a little to similar PSUs we tested with a similar setup and the numbers do not lie, the Enermax Modu82 II series is power efficient. Sure, it's not the very best class but 84-88% efficiency at 230V and 20-100% load is downright acceptable.
New in the revised Modu82+ II and Pro82+ II series is that they support the new EU regulation ErP Lot 6 for PC systems. This norm regulates the standby consumption of systems, which affects PSU and mainboard. Basically in standby the PC system should not consume more than 1W during off-state or standby. From the 7th of January 2013 on, the limit will be 0,5W. We tested that with the latest P67 motherboard from Gigabyte and indeed, we notice a 1.1W standby power consumption and 1.6W sleep mode power consumption. I like this development alright.
Remember, you are not only a little greener with a highly efficient PSU, you will also save money on your power bill in the long term. Speaking of long-term, an extended warranty of 3 years comes with the product, which is really nice.
The modular design works out great as well, you'll have plenty of connectors for all kinds of compatibility and peripheral requirements, the PSU is loaded with safety features.
The one thing anno 2011 I would like to see changes is the sleeving design, to completely black as well as the connectors. In a cool PC build, the trend these days is all black. So you pop in your black colored PCB graphics card on your black PCB motherboard inside that all black chassis, and then there's Enermax with the yellow thread through the sleeves and that red PCIe graphics plug. Yep -- aesthetics matter these days, very much.
Other then that remark there's very little to comment on the Modu82+ II series power supplies. Especially the 625W model comes with good features in terms of connectivity and peak watt allowance. The 625W model sells for roughly 120 EUR here in the Netherlands though that's not cheap, it is not really expensive either. It seems like a right balance in-between price, quality and power efficiency.
We are handing out a recommended award, it's well deserved as it is a nice to have PSU alright.
