The base is nickel plated, there's no mirror finish here but it is as good as it gets, very flat. Your processor will get optimal heat conduction.
Installation wise you need to install a black plate, so yes, your motherboard will need to come out.
Then as shown above you screw down the two retention mounts with a screwdriver. This is your base to mount the cooler on.
