Conclusion

Just about everything with the Vulcan ANC is a surprise.  From the get go, the Vulcan ANC come with the alien egg travel case, because, you know, they are full-size headphones that also fold up and travel.  Then there's the red and black color scheme, the power colors, which might scare all the Beats-wearers on the street.  You'll definitely get looks for them at a LAN party or just cruising on the street.

I suppose if you were just looking at style, the Vulcan may not be your cup of tea, but then, maybe so.  One thing I can say is that these things are the ultimate for LAN gaming.  ASUS did a fantastic job with the Vulcan, proudly wearing the ROG badge.  These are the finest gaming headsets available.  Yes, I believe I am actually gushing over a pair of headphones!

The Vulcan are very comfortable, not a trace of fatigue from any of that soft, cushy padding after several hours of game time.  Sometimes with sealed headphones your ears might not be able to breath leading to sweat build up.  This didn't happen at all with the Vulcan.  The sound isolation is also excellent, with pretty much the only sound you can hear is your own breathing (not a bad thing in my book), and it gets even better with the ANC enabled, with a slight reduction in bass as its only penalty.

They do have a few other shortcomings, and they are minor. The microphone boom is not very flexible and it tends to pick up a lot of ambient sounds.  Youll also find yourself taking it off and putting it back on several times because there is no other option to get it out of the way.  I also measured it to be 351g, a little heavier than the quoted 325g. Like I said, minor points.

guru3d-recommended_150px.jpgMy last point about the Vulcan ANC is the audio quality.  This I save for last because it was the most pleasant surprise.  The Vulcan gave my reference AKG K701's a run for their money.  Using the same amp/DAC combo, the Vulcan were very, very close in sound to the K701, only just slightly darker, a little less detailed, but more bass.  In some cases, movies and compressed audio, the Vulcan could actually be more revealing of artifacts than the K701 at the same volume.

The Vulcan have good, deep bass, neutral midrange, and a smooth treble.  The AKG K701 are still my reference, but the Vulcan, I would not hesitate to recommend them.

Pros: The best gaming headset available.

Cons: More chrome.

Our moment of Zen:

It's not called a 'blade mic' for nothing.
