1080p for a console is fine sitting several feet away even on a 50" tv. 720p sux though as anything non native on an LCD tv looks awful unless. the native res is an integer multiple, e. g. 1080p on a 4k tv. PC is a different beast though as youre so close to it, i use 3440x1400p and i dont see any need currently to go above that considering the gpu hit on performance. 4k would be good on a projector though 🙂

Yes many people still play at 1080p, but are we talking about a consoleto use for 1-2 years or are we talking for something that can last until the next generation ??

Well the only thing gimped is the gpu and the ram, cpu is the same so will just be lower visual settings and probably less detailed objects.

ITT people forget that 4K gaming is garbage for the vast majority of rigs and even these upcoming consoles.

I have friends that never got into PC and stick to their Xbox. I would consider the cheaper Xbox if I wanted to game with them occasionally while still having my PC as my main squeeze. I think my main question is how will game devs deal with the disparity? Will it be a straight res drop, or will there be graphical effects taken away or severely dumbed down? I don't know how many devs will want to put the work in to optimize their games for different horsepower machines every time they have a new release. I mean, I guess they already do that for PC releases, but it's one more extra thing to worry about. Sloppy ports may become a thing on the same console generation.

scaling in today game-engines already good just take UE as example : https://docs.unrealengine.com/en-US/Engine/Performance/Scalability/ScalabilityReference/index.html basically it just like "graphic-settings"(preset)

I still play on 1080p , i dont see much reason to change for now . 90% of gamers i know play 1080p , even with highend pcs....
I recently jumped to 1440p i can not say i gained much maybe a bit of clarity . But say you have a 55inch tv and you sit 3-4 meters away for most people they will not be even able to tell , only techies like us in this forum will look at such things . Most of the gamers that are not that interested in the tech they just want to play games . Honestly 1080p is still awesome cause is rather cheap to get good smooth experience !
