In the middle of USB-C connector, you have D+ and D- for USB 2.0 backwards compatibility. Therefore I guess that as long as it uses USB-C connector, it will not break this functionality. Interesting part is: Backward compatibility with USB 3.2, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3 This should result in ability to use Thunderbolt based external graphics card enclosures.

I'm still wondering if I ever used any device that really gained in usefulness with USB3.0.... yeah... no. I usually have a few more minutes of time to save my parent's vacation pictures to their old drive.

Would be nice if the dip*hits over at Apple would use an interface faster than their crappy USB 2.0 'lightning' port. Between that and advertising 5Ge (the 'e' meaning evolution which is nothing more than deceptive as hell 4G LTE). But nope... gotta backup using USB 2.slow or wifi which isn't that bad

Dammit USB-IF, taking all the thrill out of spy movies. There is no tension when downloading the super-secret plan of the villain takes only 5 seconds. Joking aside, I also have trouble finding use for the bandwidth. The only thing which can utilize it is hi-res display data - which is kinda useless to me. I'm glad the development continues and I'm sure someone will find a cool use for it, but it's really hard to get excited about it right now.

Hey man, pro gamers need every advantage they can get! :P USB 2.0 is certainly more than enough for your common, everyday peripherals. Although I appreciate USB 3.0 ports on my motherboard, I rarely have a reason to use them. The same goes for the USB-C port - my phone is the only USB-C device I have, and I charge it wirelessly. It's funny how people (mostly Apple fans) were saying how USB-C is the future and that devices like the Surface Pro 4 were dumb for not including it - that was four years ago, and USB-C still isn't widely used (and still won't be for years to come). That being said, there's nothing wrong with technology moving forward. Thunderbolt 3 made GPU enclosures possible, and USB 4 will make them more accessible than before. High resolution USB monitors could also be on the horizon.

By the time USB 3.x got widely adopted, the need for high-bandwidth peripherals has really diminished. Network speed and internal storage speed is deemed more important. The average USB device would function fine with USB 1.1 speeds. For whatever reason, many devices that could have taken advantage of that bandwidth (like USB webcams) rarely did so. USB is currently in this awkward state of having overkill performance for existing devices, but too slow to be of any use for high-bandwidth needs. In other words, you don't need 20Gbps for a handful of input devices or a flash drive, but, you need a hell of a lot more bandwidth if you intend to use an external GPU or record lossless 4K video at a decent frame rate.

Sorry but I strongly disagree with this statement. There's nothing inherently wrong with technology moving forward, but, the method at which USB was decided to "move forward" (since v3.1) was a giant leap in the wrong direction. Its intention sounds great, it sounded iffy on paper, and it turned out to be a logistical failure. Ironically, it hasn't got popular enough to get sufficient data to know whether the major potential issues have cropped up. Ever since USB 3.1 was released, suddenly, the U in USB has lost all meaning. USB 4 seems to fix some of the problems, but, it's still not enough for me to look forward to USB monitors and [very-expensive] external GPU enclosures.

there is no advantage to using usb 3 for keyboards or mice, if anything there are detriments because of the pipe design that usb 3 employs.

Well, I don't know about any Razer products, but there are plenty of USB keyboards out there with a built-in hub which you can plug stuff like your mouse into, effectively accomplishing the same goal. I do this exact thing. My keyboard happens to have 2 ports, where I use the other one for a Bluetooth dongle (which I then connect my gamepad to).

I personally just use a twist tie, bundle up the mouse wires, and then tuck them under the keyboard That way I don't get a mess of excessively long wires, and, there's hardly any weight tugging at the end of the mouse, making it feel as though it were wireless.

My 2017 phone still has micro usb 2.0 and I could use something faster to transfer movies out of it. Many phones in 2019 still bring that crap port, how hard can it be to upgrade to basic USB-C?

Using your phone for file transfer is not exactly an average use case of USB. It's not uncommon (I do the same thing regularly myself) but I was referring to stuff like input devices, Bluetooth <=4.0 devices, maybe some headsets, and printers. Flash drives and external storage are common, but they're losing popularity pretty fast due to cloud storage (or just simply larger and more reliable internal storage).

headsets are also not a legitimate case for usb3, the entire design of usb3 is to employ latency to get higher throughput. there is maybe one single DAC that is designed entirely to usb 3 spec that achieves far lower latency though. https://www.gearslutz.com/board/music-computers/618474-audio-interface-low-latency-performance-data-base.html

Not Xiaomi. They are still having USB 2.0 over USB-C connector to save half $.
