Why not have both?

if you like bling bling. sure! i don't care what my card looks like. but i certainly don't like bling bling. so i wont pay money for something that tries to pretend with fancy plastic shiny stuff. solid lean design is what i prefer. it's a matter of lifestyle and taste honestly. if a card with bling bling performs better than a identically priced card without bling bling, of course i choose the better performing deal. but paying for bling bling... not my cup of tea. hypothetically... if someone builds a card and airbrushes it with pictures of dog shi* piles... and it is the direct competitor to the best card out there at the moment. but he sells it for 50$ less... i will buy it.

People complaining about how cheap the cooler is really need to look up the gtx 670 reference cooler and remember that that was a 400$ card at release.

If I am reading that chart of the various AMD cards right that there is not going to be a Polaris RX 490 or 490X I take it. Maybe the 490 or 490X might be the Vega cards?? I am also interested in seeing how well this card Overclocks and what the official benchmarks are.

Well rumor say, the RX490-490X are the cut down version of Vega, we should see maybe a name ala Fury for the non cut version of it. But rumors are still just rumors.

This cooling on RX-480. It is awesome for anyone who does any kind of modding. You simply unscrew this GPU block, keep backplate and memory/VRMs passive plate in place. And then you easily screw in water cooling block or Accelero Xtreme or anything you wanted to do with it. No big deal. RMA? Simply put back original heatsink. To get Accelereo Xtreme working, I had to unsolder vapor-chamber from HD7970 front block. Then cut from this front passive block space around GPU, so Accelero could fit. Effectively voiding warranty within few days after purchase.

TRUTH! The GTX 760 had the same cooler, GTX 660, GTX 660ti, and even the GTX 680 had a beefer version of the same cooler. I even have a GTX 970 with the exact same design as the cooler as the the GTX 670. It runs 75c in most games @ 1.2 boost with 45% fan speed and is not loud.

this is not about "bling-blink". This is more about how small the heatsink is. the 480 either produces very little heat or the card will run hot. That piece of aluminium is laughable.

As long as the heat sink does its job I could care less what it looks like...;) AMD during its original 480 announcements a few weeks back *officially* announced that the MSRP for the 8GB card was $239--so, that's where that pricing originates, in case anyone is curious (I saw it.) If the upcoming Vega is "enthusiast class" it must be a real stunner!...;) If AMD can design a GPU engine and pipe that can keep HBM fed continuously--no one will be able to touch that performance with a ten-foot pole...;) That's the challenge for the HBM designs--keeping it fed! No doubt AIB partners will be charging more as they'll be using custom cooling, etc. Still, I'd be surprised if even the custom AIB 480x 8GB cards cost more than $300, tops.

Partner will not charge much more. Price as confirmed ( by AMD ) today is RX480 8GB = 239$ MSRP RX480 4GB = 199$ RX480 8GB Partner custom card normally should start at 249$ for the 8GB version. This mean a possible 269-279$ maybe for the extreme one. Normally they should stay way under the 300$ mark. As for the cooler, well the card is rumored to eat 100-110W in normal gaming condition.. the 150W is the board Power ( PCie power delivery ).. I dont think this should be much a problem.. at 200$ mark, dont wait about an costly cooling. I will not even call it a midrange card at this price.

I think it's a rather clever design where they've put the VRM's unlike the 290X that relied mainly on the fan to cool it, this has the heatsink doing some of the work too... Any ideas why there's a slot on the back of the card where the fan is?

Great little card , excellent price to performance ratio, Let's hope it overclocks like hell 😀. I like it. On the other hand , i too i'm waiting for big Vega rumours to start rolling any minute now as that's the one i'm eyeballing.

As I gather from the articles around: Performance somewhere between 970/980 (definitely lower than 980) Overclocking to low 1300's Price about 300 Euro in EU

seems to me being in the rear the heat is not blown over the heat sink heating up the gpu. so simple and not sure why 300 watt gpu's don't move them to the rear closer to the vent.

that position nullify a shorter cooling system since the fan would have been over the GPU.. 300 W GPUs just need a little more care on the power section cooling and they are usually longer so there is more freedom on the cooling system choice.
