This made me chuckle... "Halfway the movie a fake FBI warning popped up stating, “Suspicious files have been found and your attendance of the forbidden pornographic sites has been fixed. For this reason your device has been locked. Information on your location and snapshots containing your face have been uploaded the on the FBI Cybercrime Department Datacenter.” http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/960/base.jpg

@devil-strike the movies aren't illegal. its they way "you" get them, that is. if i fill up my car at an illegal gas station in a backyard, you think the company will cover a broken engine? no. so why should LG cover a user caused problem. and please show me where a "legal" site/app caused same problem, when trying to watch a movies. you don't get ransomware installed when watching sesame street.
Not only that but that particular LG Smart TV was a 3 year old discontinued model so which gives LG another reason not to help the customer.

Yeah but TV manufactures discontinue models every year now. This is not a reason to refuse service. The user error that caused the problem is. The only reason they helped is for PR reasons, LG was not in the wrong to charge him for repair.

Own a smart TV running Android ? Be warned, ransomware can also infect televisions. Twitter user Darren Cauthon has tweeted how the TV of a family member was bricked after it was infected by ransomwar... Ransomware now targets Smart TVs

Can't say i've had my tv reboot randomly when using it in monitor mode. Besides, just don't connect your tv to a network if you're that paranoid.

I wish my CRT tv's could do that too...

Make sure the automatic updating is off. Have never had this happen, then again the TV is also connected to an online ups as well. Had to replace the leaf blower of a fan it came with to silence it.

My Sony TV randomly reboots itself too. Remember when a TV was just a TV?

I'm using a, er, xd80, not seen the whole TV reboot once. I have seen apps from the play store crash very occasionally, but all I take it to relaunch them (not that I ever use any of them, it's a big monitor for my pc).

43xd8077 with VA panel here  Bigger ones come with 😛uke: IPS I prefer terestrial or satelite tv, although I have more channels on my IPTV. Because IPTV [feels] no different than watching youtube videos on my PC.

I believe every android device as an option for installing apps from unauthorized source with a warning when you select it. To install his "illegal" app for watching a movie he must have tick the option. He don't deserve LG assistance, or smarttvs don't have this option and let you install anything? I have plenty of android devices every one ask you for this, nvidia shield, android box, freebox mini 4k (another android box), smartphones.

Yeah I got the 55" IPS one, didn't want a TV that didn't have good viewing angles, would be a step back. It still "does" HDR, just not amazingly.

i think you guys talking about if lg should help him or not and if he used software from a dodgy location ...i think you miss the point ... the point is that as the owner of the tv you should always have the ability to factory reset your tv lg tried to charge for it from the start they should have told him how to do the reset hell this thing must be put in the manual if you ask me !

I was thinking that myself when I first read the thread. The fact is that with all Smart TV's they will be caught in a boot loop with no ability to reset.

Have you tried connecting your PC video out. 970 has hdmi 2.0 so that should give you the ability to run 3840x2160 60Hz, right? Is it usable? Any good?

Sure have, first thing I did. Very usable, I set windows scaling to 200% so it's the same as 1080p just much much sharper, games look very nice when I can run them at 4k
