Over current gen perhaps, but looking at the leaked prices (for whatever they may be worth), you still pay double for the 16c over the 8c. So how much could a full power 8c/16t be instead?
ofc Sticking to 8c 16t is going to be amazing value. Intel are slowly heading to chiplets too but have some catching up to do and will lose some significant market share until then I feel.
nevcairiel:

As a software developer - proper threading is hard. Games or desktop applications that use 8c fully right now are still extremely rare. Nevermind 16c/32t. We do have ThreadRipper to offer somewhat affordable high core counts already.
Not wrong. Star Citizen game Devs were trying to get the most out of Citizen's hardware but currently found it hard to use over 6 cores without running into inefficiency walls. I feel we will need a lot of software all the way from Windows core and on out through the ecosystem to be rewritten before large numbers of cores are easy to utilize in the avg consumer space. (I believe Windows is also holding back proper use of super fast SSD's in some applications, we see faster SSDs = no improvements in load times for games for example. It was mentioned that Windows was holding things back) Still are a surprising amount of apps/games that lose a Lot of performance when faced with too many cores and need to disable cores to get it to run as expected lol
nevcairiel:

I'm not arguging for 4c. 8c is quite an upgrade over that already.
Yup, glad Intel finally moved on from that point too

2019, the year of AMD and Linux Gaming ? My, oh My 🙂 (with a very big WishStick)

These leaks seem dumb to me. First off, consumer really doesn't need 16 cores. Sure, everyone here will tell me now that this attitude enabled intel to suck for years, but its still true. More then 8 cores is wasted on consumers at this point in time. Anyway.. So why don't I just buy an 8 core then? I would. But why is there no 8 core with the same max clock as the 16-core? Thats not even logical. An 8-core could much more easily reach higher clocks, since less cores produce less heat. If these are true, it seems like a really bad decision to "force" people to buy a 16-core if they want the highest clocks as well for ST performance. Make me an 8-core with the highest clocks possible, and thats the CPU I would buy. I don't need 16 cores. Keep 16-cores in ThreadRipper land, focus Ryzen on the best 8-core you can make.
You forget that if more and more people have 8+ core CPU's, then game developers and game engine developers are implementing this more into their games. Because there is a Mhz/Ghz wall soon ahead that we can't get over. But we could get over the that wall when more cores are being started to utilize in application and games.

Valve are apparently working hard on Proton (their own Wine version) for Steam Play...it would be interesting if they actually got any further than announcing they're doing something and actually achieving the results (well just high fps, no jutter/stutter, 50% shorter loading times, magical other things, running games from GoG) everyone wants to see. Even though €13 Win10 key offers from Guru3D 'affiliates' are very interesting, of course...:D

RzrTrek:

Do we know if it will run @ 5GHz on all cores or just the one?
Honestly, with modest IPC improvement and even single core reaching 5GHz on 8C/16T, it would still be CPU I would upgrade to. I do not believe in 12C/24T, but if that comes at that price... I am all in for 3700X. @Texter : Proton is able to run 1/4 of my game library w/o enabling universal (forced) support. Not bad.

Yeah, thats what i was thinking 🙂 hit the Nail on the head. Maybe a rebirth of SteamOS ?

Jims info from his sources is usually pretty accurate. I've been looking at this leak a lot today and it does seem plausible. The core counts because of the 8 core chiplets or CCXs, to the clock speeds and the TDPs given at those speeds. As for the prices..... 😎 Just hope it's not all that far out. Plus Navi looks promising from a price / performance ratio to 😀 Now to get my time machine working again.... anyone got a spare flux capacitor?

Are AMD affected by the thing Intel CPU's are, where disabling HT on Intel is one of the remedies ? edit : It would seem not.

Sorry mate, but I do think I've still got an oscillation overthruster lying around on a shelf somewhere...it used to make a noise but I haven't heard it in a while

My oscillation overthruster is still fine, I just keep blowing flux capacitors - must be a short somewhere 😕 Thanks for looking though 😉

Damn, with how this looks and if accurate, AMD is really hitting hard for the coar warz and <3 dem jiggahurz if true or even close. Heck, looking at this spreadsheet makes my 2600 look "meh" at best.

I know what you mean, hell a 3300X is going to kick my 1600X where it hurts 😛

Responding to multiple sceptic people here: AMD has shown, with EPYC 2, that it has the technology to do it. Zen 2 is a different architecture and both Lisa and Mark said 7nm was crucial for what they wanted to achieve for 2019. If they removed the I/O from the core and are doing chiplets for EPYC 2, there is no other way of building Ryzen 3000 as the cores have no I/O themselves. The top binned chips go to EPYC, the next ones should go to ThreadRipper, and only the rest for Ryzen. As for people shouting "we don't need 16 core CPUs": you're totally free to stay with your 4c/8t 5Ghz "monster" for as long as you'd like to. If a person just wants to game casually and login to facebook, the can pay 100 USD and buy a 6 core CPU. If, on the other hand, they want to render some stuff and not pay a fortune for an 8 or 10 core CPU, they can just buy these new 8 to 10 core CPUs. For enthusiasts that don't want to pay that premium for a TR motherboard or have the need for up to 32 cores, and still want to game on their working system, they can get 16 cores on the small AM4 socket and have a PC for many years. If the rumours are true, I'll get myself a R5 3600. I want a good and affordable upgrade for my ageing i5 2500k, both for gaming and some productivity stuff as I render some videos for youtube. And I can't wait to know if the Navi rumours are true too, I so want an RX 3070!

To me this leak sounds just as real as the AdoredTV's NVidia RTX leaks from August. His RTX leaks: RTX 2080 being 50% faster than the 1080 (actually it's more like 30%). RTX 2070 having 7GB of VRAM (actually 8GB) and being 40% faster than a 1070 (also more like 30%). GTX 2060 having 5GB of VRAM (while 2060 doesn't exist yet, I don't believe this at all, I'm betting on 6GB like the 1060).

Well if this is true or even close to being accurate im holding off my cpu and m/b upgrade and will now wait for AMD , i would so love to support AMD again after all the money i've given Intel over the years , how nice would it be not to have to keep changing m/b ,Fingers crossed for AMD .

I believe that they bin on 8-cores/6-cores/4-cores, and then bin that for power consumption. They have a lot of die to choose from per wafer 🙂

Yeah, he got a surprising number of things right about RTX. His speculations about Ryzen 3000 are also fairly reasonable, although I remain skeptical for the most part (I'd rather aim low and be surprised than aim high and be disappointed 😉). If these rumors are anything close to the truth then Zen 2 should be very interesting - and will definitely be my next upgrade.

Techpowerup just released their own leak with different screenshot form one of the users. But most is accurate to AdoredTV! 🙂 Excpet the Ryzen3 core count. In this link they seem to be 4/4 or 4/8 cores. But most importantly Ryzen 5,6,7,9 info seems to match! https://www.techpowerup.com/250282/amd-3rd-generation-ryzen-probable-skus-specs-pricing-leaked
That looks like the Reddit leak info, if you watch Jims video again (I've now watched it 3 times!)
