Yeah, Intel and AMD have also stated they have asked hackers to please not make any malicious programmes that would take advantage of all the flaws in their products and all millions of PC open to attacks right now, so great stuff, i expect graphics cards to drop way down in price and the PC to be super secure now, and why did nobody think of asking all this before, would have saved us all a lot or worry and expense. lol

Well I give Nvidia an A for effort on the idea of liming cards sold to Miners. But if they really really want to fix it why not develop a card for that purpose. They develop cards for workstation users as well as gamers why not miners too? I mean Gigabyte used the stuff they had from Nvidia and created a watered down GTX 1070 for mining usage not sure on how well that idea went and if even that card was released.

I didn’t realise prices had gone so crazy, I bought an EVGA 1080Ti FTW3 for my other PC for £744 back in July 2017, it’s now listed as being £929 from the same retailer with 10+ in stock, that’s just crazy, starting to knock on the door Titan Xp with those prices.

Funny, despite the fact I dislike Nvidia as a company, I feel like I'm the only one here who actually believes they are sincere about this.
Keep in mind, Nvidia was already known for high prices, and since most stores (at least of the same country) seem to charge the same amount regardless of where you're from, a lot of people think it is they who are raising the prices. After all, companies like Samsung and Hynix are the ones controlling RAM prices, so it's reasonable to assume Nvidia is doing the same with GPUs. Nvidia's price point is supposed to be based on prestige; you pay a bit extra for the fact you have "the best". But now, even Nvidia's loyal customer base is upset and doesn't want to buy their products. Thankfully for Nvidia, AMD isn't doing any better, but it still doesn't look good for them.
TL;DR
Nvidia wants to appeal to the highest amount of customers, not the highest paying customers. Miners may be raking in cash but they're probably not helping manufacturers and OEMs in the long run. Nvidia doesn't need a sudden influx of cash - what they want to see is stability in income, and if people are giving up on PC gaming or upgrading their workstations, that spells a bleak future.

Just bought me a 1080ti Strix today for 850€ in Finland, not bad.

Once again the GPUS gaming market is being destroyed by parasitic speculators.
This will increase the sale of video game consoles. I do not intend to pay 50% more, or twice the the fair price, just because people want to live without working.

Even if Nvidia is genuine about this, it is mostly an empty gesture. Many places already impose a limit of 1 per customer, and such policies will not deter miners (they can pay others to buy it for them). IMO, the most effective solution is if Nvidia (and AMD) commits to an increase in production, but that comes with significant risk on their part (so it likely won't happen). Another approach may be to create a specific product for mining, which greatly outperforms consumer GPUs and is priced much higher. Of course, what makes a great mining card also makes a great gaming card so this mining card would, in effect, be a very powerful gaming GPU (kind of like a superpowered Titan, but without display ports). However, it's questionable whether they would be able to make enough of such cards to meet demand, especially since producing such a card would drain resources that could go towards making consumer GPUs. In short, there are no easy answers to this problem.
That would also flag GPUs which are used for grid computing (e.g., folding@home, BOINC, etc.). Even if such a chip was implemented, miners could just shut down the GPU for an hour to avoid it (or perhaps mod the card to circumvent it), and that's if they care about the warranty at all - at current prices, mining with a GPU would recoup the costs in about six months so warranties don't matter too much after that point (neither the resale value).
The problem is that overall demand greatly exceeds supply. Unless they produced these cards in huge numbers, there is no way that these mining-specific cards would make a difference.

Oddly enough, my local Best Buy has normal (non-TI) 1080's just sitting there at retail price. After reading about all of these issues, I was a bit surprised. Makes me wonder how common that actually is.

This is not some marketing spoof. Nvidia really wants to have the whole PC gaming market, especially now when AMD cards cannot be bought at all. All the developers are interested then to make either very optimized or hardware specific code for Nvidia as the vast majority owns a GeForce.

If nvidia and amd cared about gamers over miners, couldn't they systematically start crippling drivers for mining usage? maybe. In the mean time (or in reality) just try to avoid buying cards when they're high... don't them second hand when the mining boom crashes again. It might help reduce the buy-burn-sell mentality of miners.

I honestly feel sorry for anyone trying to build a gaming PC now. The Gpu cost are out of this world in North America. I think the best route would be pre built or Laptop to be honest. If my PC blew up today i would get a laptop. If people decide to go a different route other than building a new system this could hurt cpu sales. THe fact you can get a 1060 for 400 dollars is going to hurt in the pocket to the point you might have to settle for a less cpu or one less stick of ram or that nice keyboard you wanted. I think mining should be shut down as it has no real purpose in the real world

Unless their website is broken, right now at scan.co.uk, the cost of a mid range 1060 is £380. OCUK is also selling out but cheaper atm. 1070 prices are also broken, being in 980ti land of the last gen. That used to fetch you a top spec 970 and not much more for a bottom barrel 980. The GPU market has literally shifted an entire price bracket or two, combined with DDR4 and basically, gaming rigs have gotten shafted.
This is the worst I have ever seen the gaming market.
The Cryptocurrency market is so "if this is worth doing it's worth doing to THE EXTREME" it has basically megafucked the GPU prices, and only ASICs can save it I think. Very much a case of the "Haves" stomping on the "have nots", from a consumer PoV.

I thought retailers were already doing this of years, it not gona make diffrence only way things will change is making Mining being done on GPU no long possible.
I am tired of GPU price going stupid cause this. I count my self lucky i was able to get my hands on 1060gtx for 299$ 4 months ago.
I did do set up to 1070ti, before normal manufacture price jumped up that same card is now 550+ seen it in some place for 700$+
