I can't believe they have reduced this requirement, now a load of less endowed people with small ones are going to be allowed to use Direct Storage.

Microsoft didn't just remove 1 TB nvme ssd requirements. They also removed the directx 12 Ultimate gpu requirements for directstorage. It requires now directx 12 gpu, not necessary directx 12 Ultimate compatible gpu. I think this one is a higher limitation than a 1 TB disk and it should be added to this article. I follow guru3d since many years and I love this website news and reviews. Thanks for the good work.

But the game needs to be installed on nvme? I use nvme only for system

Guess Ill get another NVME 4.0. I just bought a 500GB for my OS drive. Have a 4TB SSD WD blue sata. Ill use that for everything else.

PCIE NVME can be scary fast, this takes advantage of that. So yes, you need to install on NVME.

Time to try to sell my nvme to buy a new one before prices sky rocket because of that feature

There's only one type of nvme. It's called "nvme" :P

This is the question IMO. Maybe it operates like a precache? Install on games drive, important directstorage cache\assets are on fast drive. This is what I wanna know.

I think it operates like a precache but im not to deep into that new feature. I think this appears on new xbox and i never try it.

It will basically move the I/O stack operations from CPU to GPU (hw + driver), potentially bringing better use the NVME bandwidth with less CPU I/O operations. Sadly, today's hardware does not allow the GPU to upload directly from NVEM bypassing a first BLT copy on RAM. The resources must be stored on the NVME drive. Biggest benefits I can imagine is textures uploading and less overhead on mesh data when they are not inside huge atlas.

Yeah but its not like every asset for the game (like sound, logic libraries, etc) will take advantage of directstorage, so these assets must be installed on NVME too?

Undying:

250gb should be a minimum now since they changed the requirement. Not many games but it should work i guess. I only have 256gb nvme drive for windows but all my games are installed on my sata ssds.
Same here, I have a 256GB Sabrent Rocket NVMe M.2 drive for my OS, all games go to 8TB worth of SATA SSDs, and a 6TB WD Black HDD for good measure (latter's for games I don't play that often).

nvme is a waste as a system drive.
