I have UAC completely disabled. I like win 8 except this UAC bullsh$t. Always kept telling me I couldnt tons of stuff while being an administrator. Got old fast. So the store doesnt work for me. Is that the only way to go to 8.1? I never use win 8 apps. So the store is no need for me imho.

You can just download the 8.1 update iso, use a generic key to install and then use your 8.0 key to activate it. Don't waste your time with the whole process.

I have it disabled as well.. It get's so annoying when it is on. It's like the OS keeps asking you are you sure you want to do what you want to do? Windows 9 UAC will be permanently on you wont be able to turn it off calling it now.. lol.. OTL

If that happens with Windows 9, Ill stay on 7 or 8 as long as possible. I swear, MS, take 2 good steps forward and 4 backwards with every windows. They need to have a Windows 9 Dumb Asses edition with UAC on, and Windows 9 Power Users Edition or something.

That's what I had to do because the update failed to install no matter what I tried.

I did that too. My system was a mess after I upgraded to 8.1 thanks to faulty memory I've had before. Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth did wonders but I still run into issues and clean install was only option really.

Some people seem confused. Windows 8.0 and 8.1 update 1 will continue to receive updates. Those on Windows 8.1 (without update 1) will not receive updates and will cease to exist or perish!
Lol, I'm completely confused. Does this mean that a win8.1 rig, that ignores the "must update by" date, will forever never receive an update again? And will not be able to procure update 1 at any point beyond the specified date? What does this mean for a guy who owns a windows8 license if he chooses to reinstall his OS? Is he still eligible to update to Win8.1? What if he wishes to perform this OS re-install beyond the specified date? Is he forever on a neutered version of Win8.1 (after successfully updating to 8.1) that will not longer receive updates, including update 1, because he missed the "update 1" window? I guess I need to bust out the ol' google on this one. It just seems odd that 8.0 is allowed to carry on it's merry way. Wouldn't you think if MS is going to make an update mandatory, it would be the update to Win8.1 from Win8? One less sku to bother with.

I have auto updates turned off. I just make a point to check every Tuesday for new updates.
Turned it to: Tell me when they're available and let me decide... blabla. That way I know but it won't interfere with my work. Nothing as annoying as needing to do a quick reboot on a PC at work and then... le wild update appears because they were still at auto :bang: Not as annoying at home though, updates go pretty fast on SSD's.

I used to leave it at ask first too but since I use windows defender/MSSE, I've set it at auto. It became too much work lol.

You will ofcourse be able to download the Update anytime you choose but you will not be able to get anything beyond Update 1 once the deadline has been reached (and not extended again lol). Your 8.0 license has no bearing on updates. The official procedure is to install 8.0, visit the store for the 8.1 upgrade and then update. Post deadline they may force you to go through it all or just allow you to upgrade to 8.1 update directly, that is something only MS knows 100%. Or you can do as I suggested earlier, get an ISO an use your activation key to activate it :P

I've never updated my windows and I neverl will.
If there was a heroic action of the year award you would have taken it. Oh, and please tell that guy who's picture you use to fix his software.
