For the games I play, the "cheapest" one is probably what I'll get. Not into over-clocking much these days anyway.
Thing is, GPU OC is incredibly convenient through MSI AB. The cheapest will be something like this Galax GTX 1080, those would make most sense if you plan on WC though, where you throw away the cooler anyway.

What the hell is that cooler.. I wouldn't even throw that away, I'd just burn it into a smoldering heap of plastic then bury it so no one knew I ever owned something that aesthetically displeasing.

I dunno. Am I the only one who really loves the reference look? If there is one board partner design I am really looking forward to it is MSI.

I am currently selling my Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming on ebay hoping to get the 1070 or even 1080 whatever impresses me on the benchies. I just got a 4K Samsung HDTV UHD 60inch so a 1080 might perform much better than the 1070 at that resolution but I'm waiting to see 😀 GTX 970 couldn't keep up at 4K I had to lower the resolution to the 2560x1600 in games to get good frame rates

I would love the reference look if there was more black in it, that silver plastic-ey look is not the best imo, and the weird angles doesn't help it. And yes, I too look forward to MSI Gaming edition, if they keep the red black color scheme, it fits my rig perfectly, as my mobo is the same color, ram and cooler are all black, not to mention the case all black again with red leds on the many fans. 🤓

Gonna avoid getting a gigabyte card this round, my 760 wasn't a very good clocker and so is my 780, on top of it i sometimes get artifacts in guild wars 2 even when downclocked. Probably going to get msi but who knows, reviews will help me decide.
